Ed McMahon Tribute from Star Search's Sam Harris SamHarrisCOM - 3,208 views - 1 week ago
► http://SamTube.com

Rest In Peace dear friend.

Ed McMahon's first appearance before a microphone was as a 15-year-old "caller" at a bingo game in Maine. After that he would spend the next three years touring the state fair and carnival circuit. A Marine fighter pilot during World War II, McMahon sold vegetable slicers on Atlantic City's boardwalk to put himself through Catholic University in Washington, DC. In the 1950s McMahon hosted a late-night interview show in Philadelphia before working as a clown on the show "Big Top" (1950). His next assignment was as a fighter pilot during the Korean War. After that he resumed his career in television. In 1959 he was hired as Johnny Carson's straight man on the daytime quiz show "Do You Trust Your Wife" (1956). When Carson succeeded Jack Paar on NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" (1962), he took McMahon with him. This job would last for 30 years and make McMahon wealthy and famous. On the big screen he would play straight roles in the dramatic The Incident (1967)--for which he got very good reviews--and in the comic Fun with Dick and Jane (1977). He would also appear in made-for-TV movies and host daytime game shows in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1980s McMahon would team with Dick Clark on "TV's Bloopers & Practical Jokes" (1984) and host his own long-running talent show, "Star Search" (1983). He would also make commercial appearances for a multitude of products. In 1994 he would be cast as himself in Love Affair (1994) with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening.

Edward Leo Peter "Ed" McMahon, Jr. (March 6, 1923 June 23, 2009) was an American comedian, game show host, announcer, and television personality. Most famous for his work on television as Johnny Carson's announcer on Tonight Show from 1962 to 1992, and as the host of the talent show Star Search from 1983 to 1995, he later also became well-known as the presenter of American Family Publishers sweepstakes, which arrives unannounced at the homes of winners. He subsequently made a series of Neighborhood Watch Public Service Announcements parodying that role.

McMahon annually co-hosted the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. He performed in numerous television commercials, most notably for Budweiser. In the 1970s and 1980s, he anchored the team of NBC personalities conducting the network's coverage of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

McMahon appeared in several films, including The Incident (1967), Fun With Dick and Jane (1977), Full Moon High (1981), and Butterfly (1982), as well as briefly in the film version of Bewitched (2005). According to Entertainment Weekly he is considered one of the "greatest sidekicks".

McMahon and Johnny Carson first worked together as announcer and host on the daytime game show Who Do You Trust? (1957-1962). McMahon and Carson left the show to join The Tonight Show in 1962. He describes what happened when the pair first met, the whole meeting being "... about as exciting as watching a traffic light change".[6]
For more than 30 years, McMahon introduced the Tonight Show with a drawn-out "Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny!" His booming voice and constant laughter alongside the "King of Late Night" earned McMahon the nickname the "Human Laugh Track" and "Toymaker to the King".

As part of the introductory patter to The Tonight Show, McMahon would state his name out loud, pronouncing it as Ed "Mc MAH yon", but neither long-time cohort Johnny Carson nor anyone else who interviewed him ever seemed to pick up on that subtlety, usually referring to him as Ed "Mc MAN".

The extroverted McMahon served as a counter to the notoriously shy Carson. Nonetheless, McMahon once told an interviewer that after his many decades as an emcee, he would still get "butterflies" in his stomach every time he would walk onto a stage, and would use that nervousness as a source of energy.

Star Search

He was also host of the successful weekly syndicated series Star Search, which began in 1983 and helped launch the careers of numerous actors, singers, choreographers, and comedians. He stayed with the show until it ended in 1995, and in 2003, he made a cameo appearance on the revival of the CBS show, hosted by his successor, Arsenio Hall.

On The Road Again with Sam & Todd #3: "Lost Footage from the Streets of San Francisco" SamHarrisCOM - 3,141 views - 3 weeks ago
► http://SamTUNES.net

Lost footage from the streets of San Francisco.

We're on the road again with Sam and Todd, on their way to Sam's appearance in San Francisco, with a bonus crew member, Cooper. They prepare for a concert in a dressing room that Ben Vereen (the original Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar" on Broadway) just used before his own show. Todd prevents Sam from belting out Judy Garland's rendition of "San Francisco, Open Your Golden Gates" for our benefit. Cooper is stealing the show and living the good life avoiding paparazzi, demanding video pixelation and premium seating in his climate controlled limo. And then there's Sam and Todd.

Obama's Support for the LGBT Community:

"While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect."
-- Barack Obama, June 1, 2007

The Obama-Biden Plan:

► Expand Hate Crimes Statutes:
In 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported and made up more than 15 percent of such crimes. Barack Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law.

► Fight Workplace Discrimination:
Barack Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees' domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. Obama also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

► Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights:
Barack Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.

► Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage:
Barack Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.

► Repeal Don't Ask-Don't Tell:
Barack Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation.

► Expand Adoption Rights:
Barack Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. He thinks that a child will benefit from a healthy and loving home, whether the parents are gay or not.

► Promote AIDS Prevention

Ross Mathews, Host of Inside Dish: FRIEND FRIDAY #43 SamHarrisCOM - 4,649 views - 3 months ago
► http://SamHarris.com/FF

Sam meets with Ross Mathews as a guest on his new show called "Inside Dish", a web series and part of the television entertainment news show "The Insider". Sam will appear in several episodes, so he reversed the camera, and talks to Ross to find out how all this came to be for him. But more importantly, they talk about his baby Louise, his obsession with Yogurtland and sugar-free Slushies at 7/11... with a little bonus footage.

http://theinsider.com/dish
http://myspace.com/ross_the_in tern

Ross Mathews (born in Mount Vernon, Washington), well known as Ross the Intern, is an American television personality known mostly for his role as a correspondent for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. A former intern on that show, he is referred to by Jay Leno as "Ross the Intern".

Ross grew up in Mount Vernon, Washington, and is a graduate of University of La Verne in La Verne, California. He was a communications major and successful speech and debate competitor.

He has been a regular on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno since December 2001, covering movie premieres, the Academy Awards, two different Winter Olympics Games and countless other events.[3] In addition to his role on The Tonight Show, Mathews also writes a daily blog at www.helloross.com. He produced and hosted a web-show on nbc.com with Tonight Show announcer John Melendez titled The John & Ross Show. He has contributed commentary to the E! networks various 101... specials. Now Ross is the host of his own web-talk show called Inside Dish with Ross Mathews.

He has appeared on a number of reality shows, including the 2003 incarnation of the reality television show, Battle of the Network Reality Stars, in which he was a member of the Red Team. He also appeared on the fifth season of VH1's reality television show, Celebrity Fit Club. During the course of the show, which premiered in April 2007, Mathews lost more than 40 lbs. and helped his team win the grand prize. After the final episode of Fit Club aired, Mathews revealed his weight to the public for what he said was the last time, which was 164, down 50 pounds from his original 214.

Ross was a guest host on The View (July 17, 2007), one of the very few men to sit on the panel. Former co-host, Rosie O'Donnell is Mathews' mentor, according to the Celebrity Fit Club finale. He also appeared as a celebrity mob member on seven episodes of NBC's prime time game show 1 vs. 100 in early 2008.

On May 14 and September 9, 2008, he appeared in a guest role on the NBC daytime drama, Days of our Lives.

Ross Mathews, who for the past seven years has established himself as a natural and spontaneous interviewer as "Ross The Intern" on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, will bid a fond farewell to his intern status .

Having built a strong following for his reporting on air with The Tonight Show, online with his daily video blogs and appearances on The View, VH-1's "Celebrity Fit Club," TV Guide, E!, etc., each Web talk show on TheInsider.com will open with Mathews' unique perspective on what's going on in the world, followed by an array of segments or interviews of the day.

Taking advantage of the latest technology, Ross will bring viewers along for set visits, red carpet events, movie premiers and all things Hollywood, giving those at home a front row seat. INSIDE DISH will offer up different perspectives through the eyes of a genuine fan because Ross is 'the outsider on the inside.' And don't be surprised if some of Ross' celebrity friends show up from time to time, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosie O'Donnell, Kathy Griffin, Jesse James, just to name a few.

"Swanee", Sam Harris, Live in Concert, Los Angeles SamHarrisCOM - 3,162 views - 3 months ago
► http://SamTUNES.net

Sam perform's Al Jolson's "Swanee" in tribute to George Gershwin, live at the Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles, March 2009.

One of the greatest pop composers of all time, Gershwin died at thirty-eight. His compositions include such public domain music numbers as "Swanee" , "Some Wonderful Sort of Someone", There's More to the Kiss Than the X-X-X", "The Best of Everything", "From Now On", "Nobody But You", "Something About Love". Other Gershwin compositions include: "Rhapsody in Blue", "Someone to Watch Over Me", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Fascinating Rhythm", "I Got Rhythm" and many others.

"Swanee" was George Gershwin's first and biggest pop hit, and one of the most memorable songs ever written. Late in the summer of 1919, Gershwin wrote the song with legendary lyricist Irving Caesar (who is now more than 100 years old!). The two sat atop a Manhattan bus and composed most of the song en route from T.B. Harms Publishing Company to Gershwin's apartment. When they arrived, Gershwin and Caesar worked out the kinks on the piano, and within a few hours, "Swanee" was born. A few weeks later, "Swanee" got its first test before a live audience.

Even with such an elaborate production, and the ultra-popular Arthur Pryor Band performing it, "Swanee" received a lackluster reaction from Capitol Theatre audiences. The song may have fallen into obscurity at this point, but then "Swanee" was introduced to its best friend - Al Jolson.

As soon as Jolson heard the song, he fell in love with it. He immediately interpolated "Swanee" into Sinbad, his smash musical at the Wintergarden Theater. Sinbad, already nearly a year into its run, featured a rich assortmment of popular songs including the PD classics "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody" and "Hello Central, Give Me No Man's Land." Nevertheless, night after glorious night, Gershwin's number stood apart from the rest, continually driving the crowd to frenzied applause. During this run, it became increasingly obvious that Jolson and "Swanee" were made for each other.

In late 1919, Al Jolson recorded "Swanee," which he would do on several other occasions later in his career. The original Decca release landed at #1 on the charts, sold over two million copies, and became the most talked about record of the year. Sheet music sales followed, topping the one million mark. "Swanee's" imortality was assured, and a twenty-two year old George Gershwin became a hot property!

The barrage of other artists who have recorded "Swanee" includes Eddie Condon, Ross Gorman, Georgie Stoll, Sarah Vaughan, Carlos Barbosa, Jane Froman and Judy Garland. Garland, who first performed "Swanee" in the 1953 blockbuster A Star is Born (Warner Bros.), also recorded it and performed it throughout her career. But this song was truly a Jolson specialty. No other artist, not even Judy Garland, could ever hope to match Jolson's success with "Swanee." In 1946, Jolson performed "Swanee" in the Columbia biopic The Jolson Story. He performed it again in Columbia's 1949 sequel Jolson Sings Again and in Rhapsody in Blue, Warner Brothers' 1946 film biography of George Gershwin.

SWANEE

I've been away from you a long time
I never thought I'd missed you so
Somehow I feel
You love is real
Near you I long to/wanna be

The birds are singin', it is song time
The banjos strummin' soft and low
I know that you
Yearn for me too
Swanee ! You're calling me

Swanee
How I love you, how I love
My dear ol' Swanee
I'd give the world to be
Among the folks in
D-I-X-I-E-ven no[w]My mammy's
Waiting for me
Praying for me
Down by the Swanee
The folks up north will see me no more
When I go to the Swanee Shore

Swanee, Swanee, I am coming back to Swanee
Mammy, Mammy, I love the old folks at home

Back at S.T.A.G.E. Backstage SamHarrisCOM - 831 views - 3 months ago
► http://tinyurl.com/SamDates

Sam brings you backstage at the S.T.A.G.E. benefit concert, The 25th Annual Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event, honoring Michael Kearns.

This is raw footage, taken by Sam, with glimpses of all the performers, and clips of 'Nita Whitaker and Loretta Divine on stage before Sam sings Al Jolson's "Swanee".

The Brothers Gershwin: George & Ira

S.T.A.G.E. co-founder and award-winning actor Michael Kearns received the "2009 Producers STAGE Award" at the March 21 performance in recognition of his ongoing personal and professional commitment to and advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS.

This event featured performances by: Ian Abercrombie, Allen Barton, Baul Point Pen: Paul Peglar & Ben McLain, Shoshana Bean, Mary Jo Catlett, Carole Cook, James Darren, Loretta Devine, The Cast of "Forever Plaid": Roger Befeler, Jeremy Bernard, David Engel, & Larry Raben, Betty Garrett, Lucas Grabeel, Sam Harris, Bill Hutton, Michael K. Lee, Vicki Lewis, Kimberley Locke, Jon Maher, Pat Marshall, Linda Michele, Valarie Pettiford, Stefanie Powers, Jai Rodriguez, Bruce Vilanch, Dee Wallace, Nita Whitaker, John Lloyd Young and many others.

The tale of the creation of STAGE is as heartwarming as its performances. Back in 1984, during a time of mass fear and confusion regarding AIDS, a small group of friends in the theatre community came together in an effort to combat the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on their friends and family. The event was created by actor/writer/director Michael Kearns and the late writer/director James Carroll Pickett in a coffeeshop in Silverlake, California. The two approached the accomplished director David Galligan, who signed on immediately and has continued to direct STAGE ever since.

Al Jolson, a major performing influence by Sam, was born in Lithuania, Russian Empire, was a highly acclaimed American singer, comedian, and actor, and, according to PBS, the "first openly Jewish man to become an entertainment star in America." His career lasted from 1911 until his death in 1950, during which time he was commonly dubbed "the world's greatest entertainer. Numerous well-known singers were influenced by his music, including Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Bob Dylan, who once referred to him as "somebody whose life I can feel."

He enjoyed performing in blackface makeup a theatrical convention in the early 20th century. With his unique and dynamic style of singing black music, like jazz and blues, he was later credited with single-handedly introducing African-American music to white audiences. As early as 1911, at the age of 25, he also became noted for fighting black discrimination on the Broadway stage. Jolsons well-known theatrics and his promotion of equality on Broadway helped pave the way for many black performers, playwrights, and songwriters, including Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, and Ethel Waters.

Sam & Danny: Our Love Is Here To Stay SamHarrisCOM - 5,059 views - 3 months ago

IN THIS VIDEO:

Sam and Danny appear in the S.T.A.G.E. benefit concert in Los Angeles.

This is the result of the hysterical rehearsal you experienced in the recent video of Sam and Danny in the car. ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =IODEkIeUg6U

They were on their way to the event, and this is the result, live, on stage... with baby Cooper!

The video concludes with the entire cast of star-studded list of new and legendary Broadway performers and entertainers of many forms.

The songs of George and Ira Gershwin were the focus of the 25th Anniversary S.T.A.G.E. benefit concert, which is simply titled The Brothers Gershwin — George & Ira. -- The annual AIDS benefit was held at the newly renovated Wilshire Theatre in Beverly Hills, CA. David Galligan directed the concerts with musical direction by Mary Ekler.

"Our Love Is Here to Stay" was recorded by Sam (heard at the credits for this video) for his album entitled "Always" which is available for download at http://SamTUNES.net

"Our Love Is Here to Stay" is a popular song and a jazz standard. The music was written by George Gershwin, the lyrics by Ira Gershwin, for the movie The Goldwyn Follies (1938) which was released shortly after George Gershwin's death. "Our Love Is Here to Stay" also appeared, perhaps most memorably, in the 1951 MGM picture An American In Paris, for which it served as the main theme. It also appeared in 1995's Forget Paris in which it is actually a reference to An American In Paris. The song was the very last composition George Gershwin completed.

The music to "Our Love Is Here to Stay" was George Gershwin's final composition before dying. Ira Gershwin wrote the words after his brother's death, giving the song a special poignancy.

The correct title, as published, is "Love Is Here To Stay." The song is emblematic of the Great American Songbook, with both an introductory verse and a chorus.

LYRICS:

The more I read the papers, the less I comprehend.
The world and all its capers and how it all will end.
Nothing seems to be lasting, but that isnt our affair.
Weve got something permanent,
I mean in the way we care.

Its very clear our love is here to stay.
Not for a year, but ever and a day.
The radio and the telephone.
And the movies that we know.
May just be passing fancies and in time may go.
But, oh my dear, our love is here to stay.
Together were going a long, long way.
In time the rockies may crumble,
Gibraltar may tumble, theyre only made of clay.
But our love is here to stay.

Sam rehearses "Swanee" for 25th Annual S.T.A.G.E. Benefit Concert SamHarrisCOM - 961 views - 3 months ago
► http://tinyurl.com/SamDates

Sam brings you backstage at the Sam S.T.A.G.E. benefit concert, The 25th Annual Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event, honoring Michael Kearns. You are stage right of the Wilshire Theatre Beverly Hills during his rehearsal of the Al Jolson classic song, "Swanee".

Sam does something unheard of here ... he has the sound turned off and fills the 2000 seat theater with no microphone, or band orchestral amplifcation.
If you have not seen Sam perform live, please consider taking advantage of any concert dates coming up as Sam will be involved in many television and performances keeping him from appearing in future events. If you are in the Los Angeles area, NOW is the time to reserve tickets for appearances at such great venues as the Catalina Jazz Club on April 10th and 11th.

Sam sings "I Got Plenty Of Nothing" at the closing credits, recorded live.

IN THIS VIDEO:

Sam and Danny are on their way to a benefit concert in Los Angeles.

Sam tries his best to rehearse with Danny. Danny will be making a rare appearance peforming "Our Love Is Here To Stay" as a duet with Sam. Along with the song comes witty patter that just does not meet Sam's standards, so he makes the best of what he has to work with.
