I just ran a half-marathon (finished in just under 2 hours) and now my legs are terribly sore and I don't want to walk anywhere! So I thought, since I'm just sitting at my desk, that I could respond to a request for the Rocky Road to Dublin.

A viewer requested that I record this. I don't have a lot of time this evening and I'm a bit rusty on it, but I did my best.

Ballad of the three keening Marys

An é sin an maicín a d'iompair mé trí ráithe?
(Ochón agus ochón ó!)
Nó 'n é sin an maicín a rugadh ins an stábla?
(Ochón agus ochón ó!)

Nó an é sin an maicín a hoileadh in ucht Mháire?
A mhaicín mhuirneach, tá do rós-bhéilín gearrtha.

Chrochadar suas í ar ghuaillí arda
'Gus chuireadar anuas í faoi leacrachaí na sráide

Buailigí mé féin ach ná bainidh le mo mháithrín
Maróidh muid thú féin agus buailfidh muid do mháithrín.

Cuireadh culaith róin air le spídiúlacht a namhaid
'Gus cuireadh an tsleá thrína bhrollach álainn.

Cuireadh go Calvary é ag méadú ar a pháise
Bhí sé ag iompar na croise 'gus Síomón lena shála

Éist, a Mháthair 'gus ná bí cráite
Tá mná mo chaointe le breith fós, a mháithrín.

Here's the English version... seo leagan Béarla de:

Is that the dear son I carried for three seasons?
Or is that the dear son who was born in the stable?

Or is that the dear son who was reared in Mary's bosom?
My little darling son, your rosy mouth is bleeding.

They lifted her up on high shoulders
And they cast her down on the stones of the street.

Beat me, but do not touch my mother.
"You we will kill, and we will beat your mother."

A hair shirt was put on him through malice of his enemies
And the spear was thrust through his lovely bosom.

He was sent to Calvary, increasing his suffering
He was carrying the cross, while Simon followed after.

"Listen, O Mother, and do not be tormented,
The women who will keen me are yet unborn, dear mother."

My name is Ryan Duns, SJ and I am a member of the Society of Jesus [www.jesuit.org] (I am a seminarian studying to be a Catholic priest). I am currently teaching a course entitled "Intro to the Irish Tin Whistle" at Fordham University.

I maintain a blog where I post many of the tunes that I teach in my videos. If you wish to download them, go to: www.tinwhistler.blogspot.com

I look at teaching music as a form of evangelization. As as my heart has been moved by the gospel, so too has it been moved by Irish music. As I have found a voice to testify to the Good News through years of prayer and study, so also have I found a voice in the tradition of Irish music through years of practice.

The goal of these lessons isn't to teach you neat tin whistle tricks. It is to help you carve out your own space in a much larger tradition, to claim a voice through which you can express yourself and add to the rich fabric of the tradition.
About Me: I'm a Jesuit who plays Irish music (Jesuit = Catholic; I'm studying to be a priest).
I generally play Pat O'Riordan Whistles (the silver ones are modified with an O'Riordan top, the black ones are regular O'Riordans)

Father Duns (or Ryan, I'm not sure if your ordained yet, just let me know what to call you) I tend to play tin whistle with my right hand on top instead of left. I picked up the habit before I started your lessons. (Probably because I play guitar). Is this a problem or is it just a stylistic difference? Btw. growing up in a protestant missionary household I was happy to find a teacher on youtube that shares my passion for sharing Jesus Christ. (sry for reposting this I just didn't know if you saw the first one since you appear to have just rejoined the youtube comunity.)

Ryan-Thank you for the lessons. I recently purchased a tin whistle in D, and , since I play recorder effortlessly, thought the whistle would be a cinch-not! Will follow your excersizes and let you know how I do.
Best wishes,
Al
