"Toronto's ... Ron Davis has been one of Canada's hottest acts in both bop and pop circles for many years, and it's obvious why. Offering the daring stabs of Monk and the lushly evocative swoops of Art Tatum, pianist Davis's bold runs crackle with confidence, and his flawless upright-and-drums backup illuminates every note. Ron Davis-
Lawyer, turned PhD graduate, turned professor, metamorphosed into full time pianist, composer and arranger, Ron Davis has traveled a long path to find his life's passion. Throughout his many professional incarnations, jazz was never far from his mind. His extensive body of work points to strong musical roots in stride piano and swing while retaining a clean and straight-ahead style. The Toronto Star compared Ron's technique and enthusiasm to a young Oscar Peterson. Other critics equate his compositions to early Dave Brubeck and his virtuoso flashes to Art Tatum.

The critically-acclaimed jazz wonder treated fans to a spectacular new recording entitled, Subarashii Live, which captures two extraordinary, sold out shows. "Subarashii", meaning "great!" in Japanese, perfectly illustrated Ron's feelings upon completing a 10-week concert tour of Japan, returning to Canada musically inspired. "I literally got off the plane, phoned my band mates, booked two nights in a wonderful venue and we played our hearts out," says Ron fondly. "Between my band, a 7-foot Steinway grand and wonderful crowds -- it was quite a homecoming! Subarashii indeed!"

Subarashii Live is made up almost entirely of original compositions and promises to live up to the critical acclaim of his previous four albums. The first three songs are as wide-ranging and expansive as the Pacific Ocean he crossed to get to Japan: Alleluja is a languid, sinuous melody; Mio Latino a lush mix of Latin grooves; and Whirlycurl a high energy blast. This leads to Applausable Excuse, which incorporates the audience's clapping and audible delight incorporate into the actual composition and soul of the song.

Always inclusive, Ron composes songs allowing his band mates to shine. Upside Downes features world-class bassist Mike Downes, while drummer Ted Warren struts his stuff in Roundly WarrenTed. The album rounds out with some crowd favourites, D'Hora and Thomachonga. The band lets loose on both tracks. The audience crackles with approval. To close the night and the recording, Ron and the band return softly to an extended version of Allelujah. The crowd left, wanting more.

Radio Canada and JazzFM have honoured Ron's two previous albums as Top 10 picks and Subarashii Live promises to top the charts as well!
