Here's a little red rose dedicated to the two women who lived in different times and places.
Momoe Yamaguchi 山口百恵 (born Jan 17, 1959) is a Japanese singer, actress, and idol whose career lasted from 1973 to Oct 1980. In that time, she became one of the most notable singer and an acclaimed actress in Japan. She withdrew from the entertainment business at the peak of her career to marry. Almost 3 decades after her retirement, she still commands public interest with constant inquiries about her comeback, which she has never made.
"Carnival" (or "謝肉祭", pronounced "shaniku-sai" in Japanese) was her 29th single released in March 1980. It has a great Spanish feel to it, and the lyrics tell about a gypsy woman. It was a bit unusual for her to sing that kind of exotic pop song. You can compare it sort of to Madonna's "La Isla Bonita".
The one you hear in this video is a revamped version from the 1993 album "The Momoe Return II", a collection of new mixes/versions that used vocal tracks recorded when she was in activity. The Momoe Return is a series of 3 albums where you hear 27 new versions of Momoe's classics. Though most of them are never as good as original ones, "Carnival" is an exception. I think it really stands out and deserves a lot more attention, which is why I made this.
The video features the legendary Carmen Amaya (1913-1963) along with Momoe's TV performance from 1980. Being a tap dance fan, I really dig her movement, especially her powerful footwork. The beat is simply amazing.
The two beautiful women from vastly different times and places meet here, which gives you the sweetest taboo!?
