Kenshin modeled on Gensai Kawakami (1834-1872). Gensai was born in Kumamoto and became one of the most fearful assassin in Meiji era. Gensai-side had revolutionary ideas. Though he was beheaded by new goverment unreasonably,the author- N.Watsuki broke mew ground and produced a new hero― Kenshin. And the both ware divided(cf. comic p56-vol.1). On the other hand, Hajime Saito(1844-1915),Souji Okita(1842-1868),Kogoro Katsura(1833-1877),Shinsaku Takasugi(1839-1867)are historical fact.
It is not just a street fight but a civil strife for getting a nation state, and also a time when Japan was being forced to open itself up to the rest of the world after two senturies of relative isolation under Edo[Shogunate] period.
Kenshin is not a Gensai,but a KIND of Kenshin is ,absolutely,existence. This is why this animation has been so fascinated during over the past 10 years,and still now.
Strict to say, Kenshin is a new type of role model for many people...
