I tend to think that every society ends up with some sort of hierarchy. Some more iniquitous than others. Class was probably a lot more immutable in previous times; which is to say that it still exists today, but maybe not to the same degree of rigidity. As for poor people making their way up, a large chunk of the new aristocracy is exactly that; poor but bright and hungry people working as bankers.

I have a question for you. From my impression, it seems that many British people are so obsessed with the class issue. Why is that? Do you look down on people because of the neighborhood they inhabit? Do you sneer at them because of their parent's occupation? How is the social mobility in England? Can a working class person distinguish himself if he's clever? Please respond.
