I defer to the Doctor's judgment in medical matters.

But he is grossly mistaken in other ways.

We must castigate the stampeding herd or it will crush us with its filthy hooves. They hate us, and would just as soon see us hanged as look at us. I was threatened even just today for speaking the truth.
The truth is always to be honoured above all.
Even above our safety. But our safety assures us that we may continue to persue it.

The Doctor is too much of a Stoic.

On the contrary. The herd will never know the ego behind the shadow or image. There is no vanity in this soul. It is an independent pleasure to see the various types and to learn from their reactions. To go disguised among them to learn about them all the better: that is the purpose and nothing more. Nothing more.
What good would it do to be admired or known by those whose affection and admiration confer no honor? Sometimes they confer money, and that is useful. But it is always a risk.
The art of insult is not anything more than a way of making them reveal themselves, with all their false politeness and niceness. I make them take their clothes off for inspection: as every doctor must.
If you want to help yourself you will read the ancients.
I love Martial's stage. Juvenal too. Great artists.

When one sees certain things that appear to be explained by commonly known causes, one must be careful not to overhastily assume the same motives are at work. We may be deceived, or our ordinary judgments may need to be modified. I was, in the comment below, showing the sources of vanity and fashion in any larger expanding community. Of course, having formulated the basic calculation of this increase in vanity, I must have applied it to myself, as well as to Herr Rabbin Munchausen. I cannot say he would agree. Once one sees, however, this tendency and believes it to be a true observation, one is partly feed from its grip - no matter how "extravagant" is the "user presentation". And if that "user presentation" is, furthermore, for the sake of a subtle satire on the herd, we cannot rule out that it is being done, indeed, "for his own amusement".

Why should anyone be so vain as to wish to be noticed on Youtube?

As a city gets larger and its inhabitants grow in number, each individual becomes smaller in exactly reverse proportion.

As the size "n" is moved toward infinity, the numerator "X" moves asymtotically to the infinitesimal.

But vanity, which is a function of smallness, is increased infinitely!

There is a greater chance of being noticed, but nobody notices because they are too busy thinking of themselves.

I am thinking of Mandeville and Montesquieu.
