QCSYS 2011 - Promo & Lecture Series

The Quantum Cryptography School for Young Students (QCSYS) is an exciting week-long program offered to students in Grades 11 and 12 run by the Institute for Quantum Computing, in conjunction with the University of Waterloo.

Students were given a first-hand look into one of the most exciting topics in contemporary science - quantum cryptography. Students got to meet some of the most renowned researchers the field has to offer as well as tours of quantum computing labs, a hands-on quantum cryptography experiment, and a lecture series from some of leading researchers in Quantum Cryptography.

Below are complete videos of selected lectures from QCSYS 2011 including such topics as the BB84 Protocol, Quantum Optics, The Double Slit Experiment, QKD in Space, Classical Cryptography and even the science behind a Quantum Bomb Detector.

Anthony Leggett 2011 Summer Lecture Series

Sir Anthony Leggett's lectures delivered during his 2011 summer lecture series at the Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo. Leggett, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2003, is the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Distinguished Research Chair at the Institute for Quantum Computing.

USEQIP 2011

A summer school for undergraduate students, May 30 to June 10, 2011.

A two-week program on the theory and experimental study of quantum information processors aimed primarily at students just completing their third year of university. The program is designed to introduce students to the field of quantum information processing. The lectures are geared to students of engineering, physics, chemistry and math, though all interested students are invited to apply. The program has space for 15 students and is fully funded through the Institute for Quantum Computing. All travel and housing costs are funded.

The summer school is staffed by the faculty of the Institute for Quantum Computing, a multidisciplinary research centre at the University of Waterloo and an internationally recognized leader in the development of quantum information processors. The two-week program will consist of lectures introducing quantum information theory and experimental approaches to quantum devices, followed by hands-on exploration of QIP using the experimental facilities of the institute.

Tensor Network States

Interview and trailer for the four lecture series, "Lectures on Tensor Network States, QIC 890/891 Selected Advanced Topics in Quantum Information". Held at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), The University of Waterloo, Waterloo Ontario, Canada, (2011) by Jacob Biamonte (CQT Singapore, Oxford University). Discusses the course, as well as general concepts and ideas surrounding quantum computation as a tool to simulate physics and chemistry. Overviews possible next steps in the field of quantum information science, quantum theory, and quantum computation and sketches the content of the lectures.

From Atomic Clocks to Ion Traps: David Wineland at IQC

In January 2012, physicist Dr. David Wineland, from NIST (National Institute for Standards & Technology), visited IQC (The Institute for Quantum Computing) in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, to discuss atomic clocks, ion trapping and what they mean to the future of quantum computation.

During his visit, we sat down with Dr. Wineland to discuss his research, developments at NIST and gain insight on the importance of ion trapping for quantum computation. The ten videos below are excerpts from that interview, as well as his full lecture at IQC.

Interview with Jorg Wrachtrup

In November 2011, experimental physicist Jorg Wrachtrup, from Universität Stuttgart, visited IQC (The Institute for Quantum Computing) in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, to discuss diamond quantum spintronics and sensing.

During his visit, we sat down with Mr. Wrachtrup to discuss various topics including oil exploration, neural communication, quantum error correction and other fields of his research. In December of 2011 it was announced that Mr. Wrachtrup would be one of eleven people receiving the Leibniz Prize 2012 for outstanding research in the DFG, German Research Foundation.
