I'm a college administrator and professor. Interested in religion, politics, pop culture, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I'm trying out Twitter. If you'd like to encourage me, then, as they say, "follow me" on Twitter:

FAVORITE QUOTATIONS:

"Freedom to differ is not limited to things that do not matter much. That would be a mere shadow of freedom. The test of its substance is the right to differ as to things that touch the heart of the existing order."

(Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson in the 1943 case West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette.)

"When any opinion leads us into absurdities, it is certainly false...."

(David Hume in "A Treatise of Human Nature")

"Oh Moses, you stubborn, splendid, adorable fool!"

(Anne Baxter in "The Ten Commandments")
Name: MiTcH
Country: United States
Occupation: College administrator and professor
Movies and Shows: FAVORITE MOVIES (no particular order): Capote / The Princess Bride (some say it's nothing more than a chick flick, but I think it's clever, insightful, well acted, and very funny) / Ed Wood / Miracle on 34th Street (the original) / Sicko / Love and Human Remains / Grease / The Trouble With Angels / The Jerk / The Austin Powers Series / Back to School / Borat / Mad Hot Ballroom/ Old School/ Little Shop of Horrors / Tea and Sympathy (goofy as it is)/ Ferris Bueller's Day Off / Superbad / Doubt / There are others. I just can't think of them now. FAVORITE TV SHOWS (no particular order): Strangers With Candy / The Daily Show / Cash Cab (every time I hail a taxi, I hope I've finally found the Cash Cab) / Saturday Night Live / 30 Rock / The Amazing Race / Ugly Betty / Religion and Ethics Newsweekly / Mad TV / Will and Grace / Frasier / Little Britain / All In The Family / Chappelle's Show / The Soup / Best Week Ever / The Sopranos / Graham Norton's various talk shows / Project Runway / American Dad (Roger the alien is hysterically funny)/ Family Guy/ Still Standing/ Flipping Out/ Six Feet Under/ InfoMania (Current TV)/ United States of Tara (Showtime). FAVORITE RADIO SHOWS: The Brian Lehrer Show (local public radio station here in New York) / Speaking of Faith (NPR / American Public Media, the BEST program about religion, spirituality, and ethics on the air) / Morning Edition (NPR) / This American Life (NPR) / The Sound of Young America (NPR) / The Howard Stern Show (though I don't listen as much now that he's on satellite radio)/ Sam Seder on Air America. FAVORITE SHOWS (theater, no particular order): Spamalot / Hairspray / Sunday in the Park with George (the original production, though I recently saw the revival and thoroughly enjoyed it) / Avenue Q / Wicked / Follies / Aida / Cabaret / Angels In America / Little Shop of Horrors / The Secret Garden (beautifully staged and there's one song in the score that makes me cry whenever I hear it) / John Leguizamo's one-person shows / Chicago / Boeing Boeing (I'm not much for French farce, with all the physical comedy and door slamming, but the women in the current production of this play are so fantastic and funny that it eclipsed any issues I have with French farce).
Music: Hard to say. There is such a range of stuff on my iPod: from classical to the pop-iest of pop. FAVORITE GROUPS AND SINGERS: Nirvana / Whitney Houston (the pre-crack-is-whack Whitney, because now I do not know what the hell is going on with her) / Rob Thomas / Matchbox Twenty, Beyonce (I kinda hate to admit it, but I like most of her stuff) / Jody Watley (her cover of 'Boderline' is great) / Sarah McLachlan (some of songs are a bit too airy-fairy for me, but she has an amazing voice) / Billy Joel / Bryan Adams / Cake / Carol Douglas / Cyndi Lauper / Darlene Love / Diana Krall / Evanescence (the lead singer's voice is amazing) / Heather Headly / Hoobastank / India Arie / Korn / Jason Mraz / Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam / Luther Vandross / Mama Cass / Maroon 5 / Mary J. Blige (I love her cover of 'One' with U2, in addition to lots of her other songs) / Michael Buble / Pink / REM / Vanessa Williams / Boston. (There are others.)
Books: MORAL MINDS (THE NATURE OF RIGHT AND WRONG) by Marc Hauser / DOUBT: A HISTORY (by Jennifer Michael Hecht)/ Anything by David Sedaris/ MISQUOTING JESUS (by Bart Ehrman)/ LETTER TO A CHRISTIAN NATION (by Sam Harris)/ THE GOOD BOOK: READING THE BIBLE WITH HEART AND MIND (by Peter Gomes)/ VALUE AND VIRTUE IN A GODLESS UNIVERSE (by Erik J. Wielenberg) / THE MISMEASURE OF MAN (by Stephen Jay Gould)/ THE GROWING PAINS OF ADRIAN MOLE (by Sue Townsend)/ UTOPIA (by Thomas More) / THE LOST LANGUAGE OF CRANES (by David Leavitt)/ LIES AND THE LYING LIARS WHO TELL THEM (by Al Franken)/ AFTER VIRTUE (by Alasdair MacIntyre)/ GOD IS NOT GREAT (by Christopher Hitchens)/ THE BIBLE (though, technically speaking, that's a collection of books)/ GOD: A BIOGRAPHY (by Jack Miles)/ CATHOLICISM (by Richard McBrien)/ LEVIATHAN (Thomas Hobbes)/ The recently published anthology THE PORTABLE ATHEIST is excellent and well worth picking up./ And I'm a major comedy freak: stand-up and all. If I could come back in another life, it would be as a stand-up comic.

'DID the disciples die for a lie?' Series
8 videos
This series examines an argument many Christians regard as among the most convincing proofs that Jesus was raised from the dead, namely, that Jesus' disciples willingly died as martyrs for preaching that Jesus had been raised from the dead. No one, it is claimed, would willingly die for a lie.
The JESUS WAS WRONG Series

A look at Mark 13:30 and its parallels in Matthew and Luke, examining Jesus' failed prediction regarding his second coming -- "[T]his generation will not pass away until all these things take place."

I know how you feel. nuduaspiaggia deleted many of my comments on his page also. They are about my spelling of the word "humour" which apparently i should be spelling the latin way. And that i was allowed to experience the joys of new years eve because of Catholicism. I prefer to dedicate my thanks to the people of that made the Gregorian calendar rather than to the direction their faith took them. Thats obviously not my business to comment on.

Found another "the second comming is soon" bit in the new testament that I don't think you have used. Was debateing a xtian about the failed sooness and he threw Luke 10:21 at me to imply that I was confused cause I was learned and wise LOL. But if you read Luke 10 its got threats of end times punishment being given to people who were there then. Thanks for your channel and all you do!

Hey ProfMTH did you know that the Stig is Michael Schumacher? I'm thinking of starting a religion around him.

I love your background =)

nuduaspiaggia speaks of the "truth of Catholicism". What ever happened to the doctrine of Limbo and Purgatory? I didn't know that truth changes. Is eating meat on Friday during lent still a venial sin? How many missed Sundays of not going to church before it becomes a mortal sin?

gotta love profMTH. he is the perfect gay man. fabulous enough to out in the open, but not aproaching the chris crocker level of stereotype. he is an intellectual giant, who is extremely well read in christian theology and he's pretty cute, if he wasnt snagged up and i was gay, i'd hunt him down :)

Nuduaspiaggia deleted my response to his/her latest comment. No doubt s/he was embarrassed to be called on his/her extraordinarily stupid suggestion that merely understanding Augustine's works would compel one to embrace Catholicism as true.
nuduaspiaggia (2 days ago)
If you understand Augustine's words, why do your anti-Christian videos give no nod to the truth of Catholicism (original Christianity) not only on the issue of transubstantiation, but on others as well?
nuduaspiaggia (2 days ago)
The Eucharist is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ under the guise of bread and wine. Read St. Augustine.
