The mission of Prevent Blindness Indiana is to prevent blindness and preserve sight for Indiana residents.
This channel has been created by Prevent Blindness Indiana (PBI) to raise online awareness of children's vision care issues. 'Riley Ward' is the mechanism we chose to do this, but please be aware she is only the image taken from our logo - not an actual spokeschild. PBI's Seeing is Achieving campaign serves three main purposes: 1) Identify children who have a potential vision impairment. 2) Follow up with guardians to make sure their child receives a professional eye examination. 3) Locate resources for those who need but cannot afford corrective treatment for their children. Parents, guardians and educators need to recognize that falling behind in class or on the playing field can sometimes be due simply to an inability to see - children often do not know how to determine whether their sight is normal. To catch the children with visual impairments in acuity, field of vision and/or allignment, the federal government requires all students be screened in Kindergarten or 1st, 3rd & 8th grades. However, this mandate is unfunded and unenforced, meaning not only are some of our Indiana students NOT being screened, but that the shrinking number of nurses available in the school system don't have the resources to handle or make these screenings a priority. This is where PBI can assist by training and organizing certified vision screeners to go into a daycare or school system with the proper equipment to get these screenings done in one day near the beginning of the school year instead of having the students be screened one-at-a-time throughout the year. While these screenings do not take the place of a professional examination by an eye-care professional, they help identify the children who need one.

Give $10-$20 for 20/20
Support PBIs vision screening, eye care and education efforts

Prevent Blindness Indiana has made great strides this year with our programs. You can help continue this growth by participating in our Give $10-$20 for 20/20 fundraising campaign. (www.pbeye.org for more information)

We maintained our ambitious funding levels this year and are not increasing our budget for next year even though we hope to launch at least one new program. While our overall donors have increased, the tumultuous economy has lead to a decrease in giving levels this year. Our fiscal year ends March 31, 2009, and with giving levels down in all areas, we will likely see a shortfall occurring at year end. To continue our level of services to meet increased demands in 2009, we ask your help. We have taken steps in the office to be wise stewards of our resources and have take salary reductions and cut our expenses to the extent possible to continue providing services.

We hope to raise $80,000 from individuals like you to sustain vision health of our children and adults in Indiana. We ask you to commit between $10 and $25 per month to help us accomplish this goal. We also will make your gift-giving as easy as possible.

You can spread out your giving by choosing a recurring monthly gift. Any amount will be put to good use, and our new online giving mechanism makes it free and easy to schedule. To make a gift, go to $10-$20 for 20/20. Our new mechanism, powered by Razoo, tracks all of your online charitable giving without passing on any administrative fees to you or us.

Our desire is to carry out our mission and be good stewards. We appreciate your support and look forward to your being part of a successful new year for PBI.
