Paul was a child prodigy drummer at age 7. He studied with Joseph Leavitt, the director of percussion at Peabody Conservatory of music. By the age of 11 he was attending seminars led by Louie Bellson, soon becoming a student and protégé of Gene Krupa. By the time he was 16 he was working with Duke Ellington's Bassist Billy Taylor. Paul played on the jazz/blues circuit for years before he moved to the west coast and into the avant garde scene of L.A. In 1974 the legendary Jimmy Lyons, Cecil Taylor's alto player, heard Paul playing in a club in San Francisco and asked him to come to New York to play the New York jazz scene. For the next 12 years he played recorded and toured the USA & Europe with Mr. Lyons' ground breaking group while maintaining his own fabulously talented quintet. The members included trumpet player Dewey Johnson, Jay Oliver on Bass, Karen Borca, and Mary Anne Driscoll.
Paul has played with or recorded with a wide range of artist from Larry Willis, Jaki Bayard, Sun Ra and Eddie Gale. He has recorded for Cadence, Black Saint, CBS, RCA, and Mapleshade. Paul has been at the fore front of early Avant-Garde jazz with his remarkable and extraordinary drumming technique. His playing style of high-end energy and free expression Avant-Garde Jazz is quite unique and very much his own. His latest recording Break Away, with Jere Carroll & Joel Futterman, is unique and gifted Avant-Jazz at its best.
The Excursions recording, with Larry Willis, allows for a unique blend of Bebop and Avant-Garde fusion freely improvised music.
