Ox-Tales launches in Oxford OxfamGrea... - 165 views - 2 days ago
( http://www.oxfam.org.uk/ox-tal es ) four brilliant collections, featuring short stories from a star-studded cast of writers including Kate Atkinson, Sebastian Faulks, Helen Fielding, William Boyd, John le Carré, Ian Rankin and Jeanettte Winterson. The books and stories are themed very loosely on the four elements and have Oxfam afterwords highlighting different aspects of our work: EARTH (from land rights to farming): AIR (combating climate change), FIRE (campaigning for arms control) and WATER (safe water and sanitation).

This exciting project which The Observer calls a triumph has been delivered in partnership with Profile Books and Hay Festival, together with thirty-eight British- and Irish-based writers, each of whom have generously donated their time and words for free to Oxfam.

You can hear Hari Kunzru and Giles Foden talking about Ox-Tales with Mariella Frostrup on Open Book, BBC Radio 4. href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/pro grammes/b00l32z1

Happy endings - A school desk made from books. http://www.oxfam.org.uk/books -
With every book you donate, we'll turn fiction into action. We'll turn books into boats, wells, schools, houses, loos and livelihoods. Shut the book on poverty. Close the chapter on injustice.Turn the same old story into a whole new future for the world's poorest people. Donate your books now for a happy ending.

THE OXFAM BOOKBARN

Welcome to the Bookbarn in Huddersfield, where thousands of books arrive from all over the country to be sorted, sifted and shifted.

We take anything and everything. Hardbacks, paperbacks, magazines. And whatever the story, we make sure they all have a happy ending.

Were dedicated to getting the best use out of every page and pen-stroke. And in the process, find all kinds of things we didnt expect.

First, we sort the books. The ones that we can sell on go one way, and the ones that we cant go another although even these have a happy ending. Youll see.

Our dedicated volunteers are thorough, keen-eyed and quick. They have to be we receive over 20,000 books a day.

Each volunteer takes a good long look at every book to see how best we can turn them into the cash. Cash urgently needed to help fight poverty and injustice all over the world.

And we dont just send them out to our shops, we think about the most efficient way to turn fiction into action. Which could be auction, eBay, Amazon, Oxfams own online shop, or into one of our 700 shops all over the UK.

And the ones we couldnt sell? We send them to be pulped. Although that might not sound like a happy ending, it is.

We turn them into bookstands, boxes and benches: to be loved all over again.

So please donate your books to Oxfam and help change lives all over the world. Because with just one box of tricks, we'll turn fiction into action.

The Green Granny does Four-a-Week OxfamGrea... - 9,650 views - 4 months ago
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/goodid eas: Oxfam's "Green Granny" is back with new tips and ideas for living better and saving money. This video introduces the idea of 4-a-week which involves buying more fairtrade, wasting less, buying less meat products and buying more from developing countries.

GET INVOLVED
Worried about climate change? Confused about how your weekly supermarket shop impacts upon the environment? You need a personal shopper. No we're not talking about Gok Wan. We've launched our 4-a-week personal shopper guide. Stick it in your handbag, your manbag, we don't mind. Just make sure it's to hand next time you go shopping. Believe it or not, the small changes you make at the till, can have a real impact on climate change. So here's our 4-a-week, shelf-aware shopping list...

BUY ONE MORE FAIRTRADE PRODUCT
Flowers, Hot Chocolate, Cotton, Teas, Honey, Biscuits, Beer, Wine, that's a list as long as your arm. Fairtrade isnt just about coffee and bananas these days. By buying a Fairtrade product you're guaranteeing producers a good price and working conditions. Don't forget Fairtrade Fortnight, it launches this Sunday and runs until the 8th March. To see how you can get involved with this years campaign go to www.fairtrade.org.uk
THROW ONE LESS THING AWAY
Don't B.O.G.O.F, yes you heard us right. Did you know that as a nation we throw away over 20million tonnes of good food a year. Next time you go shopping, think before you buy. Are you really going to eat all that? Leftovers from last nights dinner? Try some of these recipes from lovefoodhatewaste.com

BUY ONE MORE THING FROM A DEVELOPING COUNTRY
We know what you're thinking, what about all those air miles? But, buying something with the lowest environmental impact doesn't necessarily mean buying local - emissions from transporting food make only around 12 percent of the total.. The people who are being hit hardest by climate change are also the people who depend on us most. Over 1.5 million poor farmers in Africa depend on the UK market to earn a living. So check the label next time you're buying things like rice or beans.

BUY ONE LESS MEAT OR DIARY PRODUCT
Here's a trivia question for you, What generates more harmful emissions? Is it A) Cows or B) All the transport on the entire planet? Shock, horror. The answer is actually A. Those cows are gassy beings, emitting large amounts of methane, which is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. We're not asking you to give up steaks completely, just try switching to something else once a week. You could start by ditching the beef lasagne and opting for a veggie one.

Face the Music: climate change hits poor people first and worst OxfamGrea... - 8,636 views - 6 months ago
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/faceth emusic

Created by BAFTA award-winning animator Ian Gouldstone, Face the Music shows how poor people are being hit first and worst by the effects of climate change, even though they've contributed least to it.

We can all do our bit by cutting our carbon footprints, but to fight climate change on a global scale, world leaders must act - and they must act now.

Visit www.oxfam.org.uk/facethemusic to take action.
