National Philanthropy Day (NPD) is a special day set aside for the purpose of recognizing the great contribution philanthropy makes to our society and to honor individuals, businesses, and support organizations that are active in the philanthropic community. NPD was the brain child of Orange County philanthropist and attorney Doug Freeman, who was part of the Orange County, CA chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In 1986, he met with President Ronald Reagan, who subsequently proclaimed November 15th as National Philanthropy Day. Since then, in communities throughout the United States and Canada, people have joined together to honor the spirit of giving in their own regions. The Orange County, CA chapter of AFP has been celebrating this day annually since 1986 by honoring individuals, businesses and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding philanthropic behavior within the county.
