"Apache" is an instrumental written by Jerry Lordan. It has been recorded by many artists, but the first released version was recorded by British group The Shadows in June 1960 and released the following month. The song topped the UK singles chart for five weeks. In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Apache" at number 96 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. In North America, The Shadows' original version is unknown, and the song is identified with Jørgen Ingmann, a jazz guitarist from Denmark. In 1961, Ingmann produced a cover version that, billed to "Jørgen Ingmann and His Guitar," made number two on the US pop chart, and number one on Canada's CHUM Chart. A 1973 version by the Incredible Bongo Band has been called "hip-hops national anthem". Although this version was not a hit on release, the long percussion break in the middle has been sampled countless times on hip-hop, rap and dance tracks from the 1980s. Jerry Lordan came up with the tune. "Apache" reflects the source of Lordan's inspiration: the 1954 American western film Apache. The original recording was by British guitarist Bert Weedon in early 1960. It remained unreleased for several months. In the mid-1960 The Shadows were on tour with Lordan as a supporting act. The band discovered "Apache" when Lordan played it on a ukelele. Lordan figured the tune would fit The Shadows; the band agreed. After the Shadows version began its rise up the UK charts, Weedon's original climbed to #24 in the UK. However, neither The Shadows nor Weedon had any impact on North America. Then in 1961, Ingmann produced his own 'twangy' multi-tracked cover version that was a hit in the US and Canada. From this point, the song became a staple of instrumental combos on both sides of the Atlantic. Among many recordings, Spanish rock band Los Pekenikes covered "Apache" in 1961; The Ventures in 1962; and Davie Allan and The Arrows in 1965. Sonny James recorded a vocal version in 1962.

Rep. JOSEPH CAO (R-LA) statement from the US House floor on April 28th, 2009: ......................................... Mr. Speaker, I rise today in support of House Resolution 342 to designate May 2, 2009, as the Vietnamese Refugees Day. As the Vietnam War came to an end, millions fled Communist-controlled Vietnam by boat and by land, across the Cambodian, Laotian, and Thai borders into refugee camps. Like me, many of the conflicts refugees came to the United States. In fact, it was April 28, 1975, exactly 34 years ago today, that, as Saigon fell, I climbed aboard a C-130 destined for the United States and my new life. Millions of others did the same, leaving their beloved homeland to find a new life. To date, over 2,000,000 Vietnamese boat people and other refugees of the conflict remain dispersed globally. In the United States, as of 2006, 72 percent of Vietnamese-Americans are naturalized United States citizens the highest rate among Asian groups. Vietnamese-Americans have made significant contributions to the cultural and economic prosperity of the United States. They count among their ranks artists, singers, actors, scientists, astronauts, restaurateurs, Olympians, and elected officials. While Vietnamese-Americans accomplishments are significant and notable, it is critical that their history and the history of their ancestors be recorded. Mr. Speaker, on May 2, 2009, the Library of CongressỌ Asian Division is joining many Vietnamese-American organizations across the United States in sponsoring a symposium entitled: Journey to Freedom: A Boat People Retrospective. In honor of this significant event, I ask my colleagues support House Resolution 342 to designate May 2, 2009, as Vietnamese Refugees Day By doing so, we enshrine in the hearts and consciousness of Americans the tragic, heroic, and uplifting stories of perseverance and the pursuit of freedom of millions of Vietnamese refugees to ensure these stories will stand as an inspiration to generations of Americans to come.

Viet Refugee Camp in Pulau Bidong, Malaysia 1979. Ed Bradleys first report on 60 Minutes looks at the plight of the "boat people" Vietnamese Refugees escaped from communist Vietnam. Hành Trình Đi Tìm Tự Do của Người Việt Tị Nạn Cộng Sản. ....................................... This is dedicated to an estimated half million Vietnamese boat people who vanished in the highseas to escape communism in the 1975-1990 period. Death came in different stages of the trip. Many boats sank after they had been seen but ignored by passing-by ships. Many boats had already reached the shores of Thailand or Malaysia, but were forced to leave again at gun point, then sank after that. Aside from death, gang rape by Thai and Malaysian pirates was another suffering. Statistics by UNHCR for the 3 years 1981 to 1983 showed that on average, 66% of the boats were attacked by pirates. On the other hand, Thailand and Malaysia also hosted many refugee camps. The tragedy has been 2-decade old, but like the Pol Pot regime's genocide in Cambodia, it should not be forgotten. The legacy of this boat saga is now there are 3 million Vietnamese living in 126 countries outside Vietnam, including boat refugees and their offsprings and reunited family members (source: Radio Free Asia www.rfa.org). U.S.A. has the most(1.5 million). They have become an asset for their adoptive countries by contributing a labour/tax-paying base, including hundreds of thousands of western-educated professionals. Many have achieved important positions in their adoptive countries like Advisor to the President, Lieutenant Governor, Deputy Minister, Member of State Parliament, Foreign Affairs Department Spokesman, Astronaut, Court Judge, etc.
