Visited my good friends in Bkyln and made new friends. Jah Dan, Jahnan and Haley. Haley actually had a real Mbira dza Vadzimu. She didn't know about it. So I was very happy to explain, tune it, and play a few songs. This is Nyamaropa Yekutanga, an old version...

Maitabasa Fadzi, now I can sing without struggling with the English...check how I am trying to structure the words rhythmically. You can place them in, around, and all over the piece!!! Lots of practice...comments?

Trance Medium from Zimbabwe Part 2 VictoriaA... - 2,283 views - 2 years ago
Dr Hwesa is a traditional African healer and spirit medium. Watch this video as Dr Hwesa goes into a trance channeling "The Great Uncle." She imparted "The Great Uncle" to me in a session I had with her in Victoria Falls. You may contact Dr Hwesa at "Royal Lodge, 517 Jacaranda Crescent. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe." You can reach her by email at hwestrad@mweb.co.zw (but it is difficult to contact her by email). I am Dr Hwesa's U.S. friend, not her agent. My email is masauu@aol.com. Victoria Alexander

Miriam Makeba - Pata Pata RaynerJM - 1,411,113 views - 3 years ago
Today monday 10 November 2008 we mourn the death of Miriam Makeba. Hamba Kahle Mama Africa!

I was fortunate and very privileged to have had a chance to see her in concert in Holland just a few days ago, last wednesday evening in Tilburg and last friday in Amsterdam. She was at her very best and will be greatly missed. As a son of South Africans living in exile during the dark days of apartheid i grew up with her music.

In this clip, which i first posted 2 years ago, Miriam Makeba sings her most famous song Pata Pata during a performance in the VARA TV-studios in Holland, 1979. Joining her on stage towards the end of the song is her granddaughter Zenzi. Zenzi's mother (the late Bongi Makeba) is one of the backing vocalists (in the blue dress).

Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited featuring Jonah Sithole - Moyo Wangu 1988 Aboubacar... - 9,193 views - 8 months ago
Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited from Zimbabwe. Probably recorded in 1988, but released in Zimbabwe in 1989.

With the one and only master of mbira guitar, Jonah Sithole.

Converted to digital from crispy Zimbabwean vinyl. The sound of TM's records in the west was always compromised in the mastering process, they never sounded quite the same...

Interview clip Thomas Mapfumo Sept., 6th, 1993. Photos Thomas & Jonah Sithole March 16th, 1996. Pics of Jonah in concert two days before.

The Mbira is an ancient lamellaphone from Africa. The instrument featured here is the ancient Mbira dzaVadzimu, or "Voice of the Ancestors", played widely among the Zezeru of Southern Africa, Great Zimbabwe. It holds a two thousand year history and continues to be a vibrant source of inspiration within Shona culture and the World of music. It is truly unique with its seven major tunings and 700 piece repertoire. An Oracle is a vessel or portal to knowledge and wisdom. Here, YouTube will serve as our vessel of Mbira knowledge and wisdom. I, Ikeme, featured in many of these videos, perform and teach from the traditional Mbira dzaVadzimu repertoire, primarily Nyamaropa/Nhememusasa tuning. I perform in Nyamaropa, Mahororo, and Dambatsoko chunings.
About Me: My name is Ikeme. I began to play Mbira at 23; since then I have been captivated by it's history, folk lore, spiritual practice, and beautiful music. I travel to Zim to learn from my teachers: Fradreck Mujuru and Garikayi Tirikoti. Both are well known for their mastery of the Mbira, each unique in his own approach and style.

I am a beginner just like you. Let's learn from each other!

My favourite songs are Shumba nGwasha, Nhimutimu(by John Kunaka), ZviChapera, Bangidza, and every other song in the Shona repertoire!

I am currently teaching beginners from the traditional Shona Mbira Dza Vadzimu repertoire. And I occasionally have Mbira from different makers for sale. Additionally, I perform lecture-demos for various private engagements, organisations, and educational institutions. You can contact me for lessons or performances via info.mbira@yahoo.com.

Learning Mbira is easy, but difficult to develop and master. Traditionally, an aspiring student will struggle to find a teacher, then beg the teacher to teach him, then maybe, just maybe you will learn something from him. Then, to develop your repertoire, you must struggle some more to learn new pieces and variation. Through which, sometimes, the only method is to sneak peeks into a deze! Having said that, I am very happy to offer MbiraOracle to the World through this YouTube Channel, it is the first interactive internet-based opportunity to learn Mbira as if you were to watch your teacher playing next to you in Zimbabwe! Open and Free! Through this medium, you will not learn everything about Mbira, but I'm wishing to popularize Mbira culture by enticing you with the teaching of the music, in hopes that you will learn to appreciate Africa and its contributions to the World. You'll find instructional and performance videos here, so stay tuned... Rugare.Sarai zvakanaka
