My Photo Tutor: www.myphototutor.com

A collection of tutorial videos helping learners to get to grips with the fundamentals of SLR photography.

My aim is to demystify this subject. It is full of complex-sounding terminology but most of it is not complicated if it is explained properly. My hope is that you will find these videos helpful in clarifying the basics and encouraging you to move on with this wonderful art form.

B4uask... the principle of how aperture changes the DoF applies no matter whether you are using a still or a video camera. However, on most normal video cameras you will not have a large range of apertures to choose from, unless you have a high-end professional video camera system. Generally video utilises as large a depth of field as possible to keep all parts of the footage in sharp focus but there are times when a shallow depth of field is used to focus the viewers attention onto one person or one object etc.

I must add that my vides here are aimed at the stills DSLR photography but as I said, the principles are very often the same. I wish you well with your videography :o)

Hi,
Loved the DOF video, however!!!

I'm shooting with a video camera and an adaptor that allows me to use nikon lenses, I've got 2 lenses, both 50mm, 1.4 and a 2.8 but I can't seem to get the long DOF, both seem to do shallow.
Your tutorial suggests f22 but I can't find any nikons that go much higher than 2.8 without them being a zoom lens.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Just to let people now, I am leaving on Friday (4th September) for my holiday in New Zealand so I shalln't now get my latest video finished until my return near the end of September. Hopefully I'll be coming back with a lot of landscapes so maybe I'll do a video on composing landscape shots when I return (after my macro one of course!). Anyone up for that?

See you when I get back!

Cheers,
Rob

Btw I know you have your own Website for Photography, but have you given any thought to joining Flickr?

Hi Rob- After watching several of your tutorials I wanted to say thank you for your efforts. They are truly appreciated and I'm excited about using the new understanding of photography you've given me. You've got a great method of teaching and explaining and I find myself sitting in my chair nodding a lot while I watch your videos- with a sense of satisfaction and relief that I finally understand these concepts of photography. I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties with your health, and am glad to hear you are recovering. Get well soon- and please accept my thanks for your help!

Best Regards,
-Mark

truly informative and effective teaching- cause you have cleared up all the confusion. A million heartfelt thanks Rob. You seriously have an amazing way of presenting, making people understand critical aspects like a breeze. I am so looking forward to see more and more and more lessons. If I place a request, could you please demonstrate something on macro photography- what kind of lenses should we use, settings and everything. Thanks once again and keep up the good work Barron.
