''ZERO91'' is a unique TV-first for Malta: it follows a group of Armed Forces of Malta's recruits (Intake 091) during their Basic Military Training course between Spring and Summer of 2009.
This reality-TV documentary programme is a yet untried concept on local Maltese TV, as it adopts the ''fly-on-the-wall' style of journalism, so familiar thus far in many other Big Brother-style shows.
The joint-production team, which includes Basement Productions, AFM media and public relations staff, follows the daily training of the AFM recruits: from their first day of enlistment and kitting out of their equipment gear, through the parade-square foot and arms drill bashing by their Drill Instructors, along with their intense 2-week lock-down living-in barracks period.
Twenty of these recruits have been selected by our joint-production team, and will be followed closely out of the remaining 40 others that make up two squads of this recruits' intake. We'll follow them closely, seeing their character and personality changes from a civilian into a trained soldier, their attitude changes to life. We delve into their family lives and its background, how they come about to reacting instinctively to barked orders, changes to their physical and mental stamina and their improved capabilities, as they mill through a myriad of military exercises.
This programme is all there for you: from day one of the recruits' enlistment to their last together as a band of brothers in their respective squads, when they perform their Passing-Out Parade before the Hon. Prime Minister.
We'll show how aimlessly dazed and often confused young men are turned into proud Maltese soldiers.
This locally never previously attempted TV-programme concept offers an unprecedented open-door insight into one facet of AFM soldier-training, and it promises to instil a sense of pride and appreciation for those few men in army fatigue uniforms who make a selfless sacrifice to the Nation through their diligence, professionalism, and dedication to duty.
Each episode of this programme-series will show various training processes like physical fitness and weapon training, map reading and skill-at-arms down range, foot and arms drill, and much more.
Our innovative filming-action style will be edited in a fast-paced manner to originally composed music tracks.
''ZERO91'' promises to be one of the most followed TV shows during next October 2009's programming-schedule on Net TV

Air Wing Vessel Deck Helicopter Landings
The training being conducted by the AFMs Air Wing with the assistance of other military forces in helicopter deck landing operations is to allow our crew to gain experience in operating off of surface vessels which will eventually lead to operations being conducted in conjunction with Maritime Squadrons P-61 long range patrol boat.
While AFM helicopter pilots have landed aircraft on vessels at sea in the past, this has mainly been done to facilitate a rescue or recovery operation at sea and by nature is quite a dangerous mission. The training currently being conducted is aimed at giving all flight crews and not only the pilots a basis of understanding the factors involved in operating on surface vessels in order to perfect operational procedures and increase safety margins.
The Alouette III helicopter operated by the Air Wing is the units main rescue platform but is regularly used to perform such missions as searches, medical evacuations from ships at sea, and air ambulance missions between the islands hospitals. The aircraft is normally operated by a single pilot and assisted during a sortie by a senior aircraft technician who acts as a second pair of eyes for the pilot and also operates the aircrafts winch during rescue operations.
The training carried out thus far with the US Navys USS Robert G. Bradley in April and now with the German Navy FGS Danau has allowed all the flight crews to build up experience and a knowledge base in deck landing operations with many of the crews logging as much as 20 landings on deck during a single sortie.
For training purposes the helicopter will make an approach onto the vessels helicopter deck and then hover at varying altitudes over the deck allowing the pilot to pick up visual reference points. The pilot will then allow the helicopter to settle onto the deck with specific height information provided by the technician on board the aircraft. Once the aircraft has landed on the deck, the pilot will again take off, but instead of flying away, he will perform the same have to landing sequence referred to by aircrew as Bounces. Normally, 3 to 6 bounces are performed by the pilot for every training approach made to the vessel.
The crew coordination required during such manoeuvres is high and the experience garnered during this training will surely pay off once deck landing operations commence on the P-61 both with the current Alouette III helicopter and any other type that will eventually replace it.

Fishing boat sinks despite attempts to save it
An Italian fishing boat which was being assisted by an AFM patrol boat and an Italian warship, sank while on tow to Lampedusa.
The Giuseppe Castano sent out a Mayday call early in the afternoon of Wednesday, 27th May 2009 when it was 52 miles off Malta.
The AFM's Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC Malta) at Luqa Barracks immediately dispatched a Malta-based Italian Air Force AB212 helicopter and Maritime Squadron's patrol boat, P-51.
Other fishing boats, and a tug-boat were also diverted to the scene while the Italian warship Casiopea deployed its onboard helicopter. A French naval vessel in the area also kept its onboard helicopter on standby for the fishing-boat crew's evacuation.
The immediate danger of the fishing-boat's sinking was initially averted by mid-afternoon after a pump was rigged on board the fishing boat. However, P-51 provided another two water-pumps and two operators after the first pump developed a fault.
The fishing boat then started being towed to Lampedusa by another vessel, with three AFM personnel on board to operate the pumps.
However, the pumps stopped and the Casiopea was unable to transfer more fuel to the fishing boat for use by the pumps because of deteriorating sea conditions in the area. The fishing-boat's crew were evacuated by rubber dinghy to the Casiopea'. Once the tow-ropes were cut, the 80-foot long white hull of the Giuseppe Castano sank just 15 nautical miles East of Lampedusa during the night.
P-51 was granted overnight port access in Lampedusa.
