Lola Flores, Angelitos Negros LinnieK9 - 60 views - 4 days ago
This is an intense rendition of Manuel Alvarez Maciste and Andrés Eloy Blanco's "Angelitos Negros," by the incomparable Lola. (Originally posted by BurronAzul.)

Lyrics:
Pintor nacido en mi tierra
con el pincel extranjero
pintor que sigues el rumbo
de tantos pintores viejos

Aunque la Virgen sea blanca
píntame angelitos negros
que también se van al cielo
todos los negritos buenos

Pintor si pintas con amor
Porque desprecias su color
si sabes que en el cielo
también los quiere Dios

Pintor de santos de alcoba
si tienes alma en el cuerpo
porque al pintar en tus cuadros
te olvidaste de los negros

Siempre que pintas iglesias
pintas angelitos bellos
pero nunca te acordaste
de pintar un ángel negro

Pintor de santos de alcoba
si tienes alma en el cuerpo
por que al pintar en tus cuadros
te olvidaste de los negros

Siempre que pintas iglesias
pintas angelitos bellos
pero nunca te acordaste
de pintar un ángel negro

Fados de Saura, (OUT OF SYNC) Mariza e Miguel Poveda, Fado Flamenco, "Meu Fado Meu" LinnieK9 - 391 views - 1 month ago
Sorry, this upload is really out of sync. I don't know why, so just close your eyes and listen to the music! (LOL)

This clip is from Carlos Saura's 2007 film, "Fados," his tribute to the Portuguese music genre. As in many of Saura's films there is no plot.

Mariza and Miguel Poveda perform "Meu Fado Meu." Poveda is a flamenco singer born in Barcelona in 1973. Mariza is a very popular fado singer worldwide.   This matching of Mariza and Poveda provides a dialogue between flamenco and fado.

Fado (translated as destiny or fate) is a music genre which can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. However, in reality fado is simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain structure.

Fados de Saura (OUT OF SYNC), Lila Downs, Homenagem a Lucilia do Carmo, "Foi na Travessa da Palha" LinnieK9 - 293 views - 1 month ago
The audio and video for this excerpt are terribly out of sync. They're fine when I upload them. Best suggestion is to close your eyes and listen to the music! (LOL)

Homenagem a Lucilia do Carmo
Lucilia do Carmo (1920-1999) is the mother of Carlos do Carmo.

"Foi na Travessa da Palha" (Lila Downs) was one of Lucilia do Carmo's hits. Downs in a Mexican singer who was on the soundtrack of "Frida." The song's title means "In the Straw Lane." As you can guess from the dancers who portray a love triangle, it is narrated by a woman whose lover is unfaithful and she sings to win her lover.

This is the last of Carlos Saura's flamenco trilogy made in 1986. It is set to Manuel de Falla's ballet El amor brujo (Love, the Magician)..

Love, dance and death are key to this film, set in a gitano village in Andalucia. Carmelo (Antonio Gades) is in love with Candela (Cristina Hoyos), who was betrothed to José (Juan Antonio Jiménez) when they were children according to Roma law.

The marriage takes place after they've grown up. Meanwhile José continues to see his mistress, the beautiful Lucía (Laura del Sol).

This clip is from the wedding scene. There is a grandmother's dance on the DVD which was not included on the tape. Dance is for all ages, not just the young!

Gades' choreography is incredibly dramatic

Songs of the Auvergne (Chants d'auvergne), Netania Davrath, Trois Bourées LinnieK9 - 187 views - 2 months ago
Chants d'Auvergne (Songs of the Auvergne) is a compilation of folk songs collected and arranged by the composer Joseph Canteloube between 1923-1930, They are scored for soprano voice and orchestra, and are sung in the Occitan language.

Netania Davrath (1931-1987) was born in the Ukraine, then emigrated to Israel. Although she wasn't the first to sing these songs (Madeleine Grey did in the 1930s), and she is not the last, I find her voice uniquely suited for these pieces,

SPANISH LYRICS:

These may not quite match up with the video as the guys were jamming there.

¿Tu eres asi?
Óyelo bien Xiomara, habla
Dime si estás arrepentida
De haberme querido tanto
Como yo te quisé a ti

Ya todo terminó y todo se acabó
Sin amigo y sin amor

Que yo también como todo
Tuve dinero, amigo y amor
Y mis amigos me brindan traición

Tahuantinsuyo, Kurukay, sikureada LinnieK9 - 226 views - 3 months ago
TAHUANTINSUYO was a pioneering folk music group from the Andes using regional instruments and costumes during their performances.

Tahuantinsuyo was formed by Guillermo Guerrero from Ayabaca, a small town in the northern Peruvian Andes back in September 1973, and ever since the members of the group have been dedicated to the research and performance of the traditional music from the Andean countries that once formed the "Inca Empire" (known as Tahuantinsuyo in Quechua, the native language) which now comprises six countries which are: Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina y Colombia.

The Members of TAHUANTINSUYO are: Guillermo Guerrero (Founder and Director), Fernando Leyva, John Freire, Andres Jimenez, Alcides Loza.

They are often joined by Cesar Vele. They are family and friends who share the common goal of trying to keep the traditional Andean music alive and to help their people to identify with their culture.

I heard this group at a Clearwater folk festival near my home over 30 years ago; they were selling the LP there. I don't know if they still exist or others took up where they left off.

I have an antara and a quena and they take a lot of abiity to play (which I don't have)!

Camadde, Celia Cruz ¡Azúcar! LinnieK9 - 291 views - 3 months ago
This cut was on her early ¡Azúcar! album, but I first bought it on a 45 around 1956 or 1957. She had just made her first appearance (with Tito Puente) at the Palladium Ballroom in NYC. I really didn't know what to expect until she opened her mouth to sing. Powerful, playful, good natured, and very talented.

Lamento Borincano, Canario y su Grupo, Puerto Rico in the 1940s LinnieK9 - 803 views - 3 months ago
These photos from the 1930s and 40s show Puerto Rico as a still-agrarian country Canario y su Grupo were one of the earliest recorded Puerto Rican groups. "Borinquen" comes from the indigenous Taino name for Puerto Rico.

"Lamento" was written in 1929 while Hernández was living in New York City. The song depicts the struggles of a Puerto Rican "jibaro" (a term used to describe a Puerto Rican peasant; or just anybody from the countryside) to survive. The lamentos were the protest songs of their time,

Lamento Borincano lyrics: Author/Autor: Hernández, Rafael

De mi desdichada Borinquen, si;
Y triste, el, jibarito vá
pensando así, diciendo así
Llorando así por el camino;
¡Que será de Borinquen
Mi Dios querido!
¡Que será de mis hijos
Y de mi hogar!

Borinquen, la tierra del edén
La que al cantar, el gran Gautier
Llamó la perla de los mares.
Ahora que tu te mueres
Con tus pesares
Déjame que te cante yo tambien.
Yo también.
