Asnakech Worku - "Une grande dame d'Ethiopie" - a great artist from Ethiopia JosieKro - 18,712 views - 7 months ago
Asnakech Worku was born in 1931, in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. Since the times of Emperor Haile Selassie I, she has become a legend in Ethiopian music.

Asnakech accompanies herself on the Krar, the small Ethiopian lyre. She bought her first instrument for 25 Cents when she was a child and learned how to play the instrument by watching the Azmari, the Ethiopian musicians that are sometimes compared with the minnesingers and troubadours of the European Middle Ages.

Asnakech began performing in small bars and cabarets. But before starting her career as a famous singer and musician, she first started to work as an actress and dancer at the City Hall Theatre in 1952 and later on in 1955 at the Haile Selassie I Theatre, where she started to sing and play the Krar beside her work as an actress. There she worked until her retirement in the late 80s.

At that time, Asnakech was the first actress in Ethiopia and the only famous woman beside Mary Armede who played the Krar.

For many years she was recognized to be one of the greatest Krar players in Ethiopia. She became the most famous traditional female musician in her home country.

Today she is one of the very few artists that helped to develop the Ethiopian cultural scene and deeply influenced it. She is highly respected by the modern artists and the people of her home country.

Asnakech's songs became a part of the rich repertoire of folk songs in Ethiopia. Hits like Ende Jerusalem are still sung by many Ethiopian artists. And there is something very special to report about Asnakech Worku: in the male dominated world of African master musicians, she is an unassailable authority.

Asnakech did numerous LP and Cassette recordings in Ethiopia. As well there is a CD that was recorded and released in Germany, in 1996, while she was touring Europe.

She has traveled throughout the entire world and performed in many different countries. Josephine Kronfli & Pit Budde, members of the Band "Karibuni" invited her several times to Germany and had the great opportunity to accompany her during her tours.

Since more than 5 years Asnakech Worku is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. For this reason she is not able to perform anymore.

As there is no health insurance in Ethiopia and the retirement payment is very low, the musicians of "Karibuni" would like to recommend you to order her wonderful CD. In buying her CD you will support Asnakech and last but not least you will get the opportunity to enjoy the music of one of the greatest artists in Ethiopia.

a song against Child Soldiers
sung in Lingala
and German.
Angola & Germany!

Translation of the song:

I went to Luanda as life in my village became unbearable
Children went to school and didn´t come back
Children went to fetch firewood and didn´t come back

We have no school in the village
The school has been bombed
We have no hospital in our village
The hospital has been bombed

I went to Kinshasa as life in my village became unbearable
Roberto was still going to school, but now he´s a soldier
Roberto was playing in the village street and noone has seen him since then

And I dream... No child soldiers
And I dream... No child soldiers

Don´t destroy the future of the children
Give them a chance for a good future

In my village there is no school anymore
There is no hospital either, and life is hard there
The school was bombed and then burnt down
See the ruins where the hospital once stood?

Roberto was just 15 and lived around here
It´s been weeks now since I last saw him
He was on his way to school with his friends
Like every day when they were captured

By a troop of soldiers, or were they rebels?
I heard later from a friend that
Roberto must now fight, shoot and obey
I heard that from someone that had escaped

Roberto went to school and still had lots to learn
He would be lucky if he´s still alive now

And I dream... No child soldiers
And I dream... No child soldiers

Don´t destroy the future of the children
Give them a chance for a good future

Djam, djam, djam, I say: Let us play Kebo
Help children, I say: Let us play football
Let´s keep our eyes wide open, I say School for kids!
Djam, djam, djam, I say: Build our land together
Djam, djam, djam, I say: The world belongs to us all!

a peace song - sung in Amharic, Lingala and German!

Translation of the song:

from Amharic:
Peace is our wish, Love is our goal
Peace is our wish, Joy is our goal
Peace and love for all people
All over the earth, all around the world.

Selam, Shalom, Shlomo,
All over the earth, all around the world.

from German:
No matter how we look, whether black or red,
Whether yellow or white, we all need bread
And water and air and warmth in the winter
A roof over our heads and room for the children

Selam, Shalom, Shlomo
With all mankind living in peace

Amharic:
Joy and love for all humanity, day after day
Joy and peace for all humanity, day after day
We should not differenciate between black, white and red.
We should keep hate far away

Selam, Shalom, Shlomo
All over the earth, all around the world.

Lingala:
Be happy that you´re alive. Life is too short, so don´t shorten it more
Death will come... sooner than you think

Selam, Shalom, Shlomo
We went such a long way to find a peaceful place

Amharic:
You children shall grow up with peace, babies and youngsters
You children shall grow up with love, cause you are the flowers of today
You children shall grow up with harmony,
Because you are the seeds of tomorrow

Selam, Shalom, Shlomo...
All over the earth, all around the world.

The core of the group KARIBUNI is formed by Josephine Kronfli and Pit Budde together with Carlos Mampuya and Klaus Jochmann.

KARIBUNI is defined by the native sounds, experiences and preferences of each of the individual players and it is not purely Ethiopian, European or Angolan music. The musicians all contribute to the compositions on an equal basis, thus creating their own musical language which is not limited by boundaries of any kind.

The main focus of KARIBUNIS musicians is on the composition of their songs and writing them in such a way that the respect and sensitivity for the culture of others, with their own individual ideas and abilities, helps to create and enrich new musical ideas.
The resulting music therefore reflects the international reality in which we all live.

Given all of the above it is logical that KARIBUNIS songs are sung in many different ways. The song may be written in the Ethiopian language: Amharic, but a verse in the same song could also be sung in Kicongo (Congo), English, French or German. This is a reflection of the linguistic diversity which surrounds us and the individual musicians - not only in their daily work but also in everyday life.
The result is a multifaceted musical experience that their listeners all over the world, from Ethiopia to the United States, from Germany to the Middle East have both found and enjoyed, as can be seen the enormous amount of views of their various videos on YouTube.

With the Fair Trade label release entitled "Songs Of Coffee From All Over The World."The musicians from KARIBUNI, previously under the name of "LaméBora" together with friends from various nations, drew together to write songs about coffee and its role in society and culture around the world.

Since their formation over ten years ago KARIBUNI has released 13 CDs under the umbrella title "World Music for kids & adults" including music from Africa, the Orient, Latin America and the Rainforest.

KARIBUNI MEMBERS:

Josephine Kronfli: Whistle, Flute, Percussion, Autoharp, Vocals

Pit Budde: Guitars, Percussion, Vocals

Carlos Mampuya: Vocals, Percussion, Lipenga

Klaus Jochmann: Accordion, Congas, Djembe, Cajon, Vocals
