Having already released "Northern Soul 2007" and "Norther...
more
Having already released "Northern Soul 2007" and "Northern Soul 2008" on Centre City Records over the last two years, I began to record the songs for "Northern Soul 2009" in February of 2009, with my long time producing partner Clive Scott, until that awful unspeakable day of May 10th, when Clive passed away. just two weeks after suffering a terrible accident, caused by falling off a ladder, and left us all devastated. Fifteen of the songs were finished. Clive and I had started the music for six more, and now, in honour of his memory, I have compiled a further seven songs which Clive and I had written for various projects but had never been released. It seemed only right that Clive's last ever project, "Northern Soul 2009", should contain all songs that he had written with me, so with a heavy heart, we have set about the task of completing this monumentally importatnt project to keep his skill and talent alive forever. We hope to finally release it at the end of July. Here, the scintillating Esjae Gennice sings "Standing In The Darkness", another song which Clive and I actually wrote with her just mere weeks before his accident. I just love and adore this song and this performance. Noel McKoy brought Esjae to me and said she was perfect for Centre City Records. Her demos were of Dionne Warwick songs, and I was amazed by how much like Dionne she actually sounded, so I wrote a song for her which lilted and swayed while still stomping like an old Motown classic. I'm so glad we all got to record this while Clive was actually still with us. Once again, the new album, "Northern Soul 2009", is being distributed by Wienerworld, who have put out all our Northern Soul DVDs, and this time we look certain to get it sold in all the remaining major record shops around the country. A bittersweet loving tribute to the much missed Clive Scott.

We hope to finally release it at the end of July. Here, Tommy Hunt sings "Wildfire", a song which Clive and I actually wrote for Rosetta Hightower just a few weeks before his accident. It was fated not to be, as we had a power cut that day, so Rosetta turned round and went home. Then the power came back on but she decided not to come back to the studio, so we demo'ed it for Tommy Hunt to sing, never dreaming Clive would pass away before he got a chance to do his vocals. Glenn Keiles helped me to finish the track, and The Flirtations and Steve Brookstein are all singing on the backing vocals. The legendary Tommy Hunt, now singing for his sixth decade professionally, had a hit in 1975 with a cover of a song I first discovered myself and broke at Blackpool Mecca, by Roy Hamilton, called "Cracking Up Over You", and then we filmed it for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". Born on the 18th June 1933, music dominated his life, and whilst performing in a club one night he was approached by Zeke Carey of The Flamingos to join the group and temporarily take his place whilst he served his time in the Army. There followed in 1958 their biggest hit 'I Only Have Eyes For You' for which the Flamingos are world renowned and it remains their most popular song, being used in movies and on compilation discs to this date. Tommy left the group in 1960 due to differences, mainly because he was not Jewish as were all the other members with the exception of Nate Nelson. Within 3 days he was approached by Luther Dixon and released 'Parade Of Broken Hearts' which was slow to be picked up by the radio stations until one day in New York a deejay by the name of Jocko introduced the song and flipped it by mistake causing the phones to ring off the hook... That song was 'Human'...Tommy's biggest hit in the USA. Tommy became a regular performing at The Apollo in New York. In the 1970s he moved to the UK, and Tommy sang for the 2nd Anniversary of the Wigan Casino and there followed the ladder of his success on the Northern Soul Scene. Tommy was approached by Russ Winstanly and Mike Walker of Wigan Casino fame and released several hits on Spark, firstly a cover version of "Cracking Up Over You", formerly sung by his idol and biggest influence Roy Hamilton, and then followed on by this song, which gained some chart success in 1976, "Loving On The Losing Side". 1982/83 saw him win the Male Vocalist of the Year, presented by the Club Mirror Award. In 1996 the first of his recognitions came in the form of The Rhythm and Blues Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for the Flamingos contribution to music. The Flamingos were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame of America for their 30 year outstanding contribution to music. Once again, the new album, "Northern Soul 2009", is being distributed by Wienerworld, who have put out all our Northern Soul DVDs, and this time we look certain to get it sold in all the remaining major record shops around the country. We hope to finally release it at the end of July. Here, Philadelphia Northern Soul legend, Ronnie Walker, sings "So Far Beyond My Dreaming", another song bursting with hope for the future, which Clive and I actually wrote with Ronnie, sending the music between Ascot and Philadelphia, just weeks before his accident. We cut the music in England, sent it over to Philadelphia, and Ronnie recorded himself over it, and sent us his vocals back to England for Clive to mix just in time before he passed away. Ronnie also managed to get himself filmed for us to edit this video. It is such a privilege to be able to cut a brand new song on one of my heroes. Ronnie was the early songwriting partner of Philadelphia legend Vince Montana, and my dear old friend Val Shiveley, one of Philadelphia's oldest record dealers, traced Ronnie for me, back in 1998, as, prior to that moment, no-one had ever tracked him down. He had an earlier Northern Soul smash called "You're The One", on Phillips Records, but it was "You Got To Try Harder", with its perfectly pitched, clear as a bell, falsetto, that really epitomised those mid Sixties nights in the Highland Room at the muuch beloved and missed Blackpool Mecca. Originally, back in Late 1998, that particular song was yet another legendary Northern Soul smash that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". It was first recorded in 1974 and then we recut it in 1998 when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. We had no lead for Ronnie for ages, but kept on looking, until, after much searching, we tracked him down to make these one and only one-time performances especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did. Once again, the new album, "Northern Soul 2009", is being distributed by Wienerworld, who have put out all our Northern Soul DVDs, and this time we look certain to get it sold in all the remaining major record shops around the country. We hope to finally release it at the end of July. Here, Donna Williams sings "Make Me Fly Away", another song bursting with hope for the future, which Clive and I actually wrote with her weeks before his accident. This is Donna's fifth song with us, and how utterly wonderful this is. It lifts my soul and makes my spirits soar. Donna Williams took the melody and played with it like a temptress, seductively coaxing sultriness out of every note. WOW !!! Donna was brought to me by Leee John, lead singer of Imagination, who recommended her for our "Disco 2008" album, for which she sang "Let Me Be A Sinner". Then on our recent "Yesterday And Tomorrow",album, she did the most stunning job reinventing Miquel Brown's classic "So Many Men So Little Time". And then we blew everyone away with "Landed On My Feet" for "Northern Soul 2008", and "Road To Reason" for "Soul Steppers". Donna herself said it was time she cut a real good old stomper, and here comes "Make Me Fly Away", and we never dreamed she could be as stunning as this, and this one is going to be a hard act to beat. Once again, the new album, "Northern Soul 2009", is being distributed by Wienerworld, who have put out all our Northern Soul DVDs, and this time we look certain to get it sold in all the remaining major record shops around the country. We hope to finally release it at the end of July. Here, Kitty Corbin sings "Witchcraft", another song bursting with hope for the future. This particular song was originally for Benjamin Barnes, back in 2003, and Ben and I co-wrote this fabulous smooth uplifting future soul classic with Clive. That was before Ben became world famous starring as Prince Caspian in "The Chronicles Of Narnia", so I decided to remake it with Kitty, speeding it up and turning it into a storming Northern Soul anthem. Kitty made her debut for last year's "Northern Soul 2008" album with the fabulous "Guessing Games". Out of all the tracks on that album, that one became the real sleeper, the one you walked around all day singing, and just can't get the damn thing out of your head, come what may. Kitty is just fabulous, so willing, so lovely, so co-operative, and such a warm hearted person, and it makes me proud to have artists of this calibre on Centre City Records. She delighted us once again for the "Soul Steppers" album with an even better Seventies Thom Bell type sound on "One Step At A Time". And yet again, Kitty was discovered by Tahira Jumah. Kitty had been a famous London DJ under the name of Kitty Kat, but once she turned her hand to singing, she excelled and makes a perfect Centre City artist. She has always been known for her bright red dreadlocks, but we decided to go for a more demure and feminine image for her. Once again, the new album, "Northern Soul 2009", is being distributed by Wienerworld, who have put out all our Northern Soul DVDs, and this time we look certain to get it sold in all the remaining major record shops around the country. A bittersweet loving tribute to the much missed Clive Scott.
