My brother G...... had a nice topo-map of The Three Sisters before we went out to Oregon and we did talk about summitting the mountain before we went out to Oregon. We had some horribly faulty information. K.... who is married to my brother G........ and is originally from Springfield, Oregon, had emphatically stated that she and her the rest of her 6Th grade class had summitted the Middle Sister and it was all done with-in a day field-trip. Given the difficulty and the danger on traversing those talus fields and the dangerous descent and the time and the endurance needed to summit the Middle Sister in a day, K.... clearly had a false memory of the events of the day she took a field-trip up the Middle Sister with her 6Th Grade class. I am certain and so is my brother G....... that K...... and her 6Th grade class made it past the tree-line where there is a dramatic break from a forest to suddenly nothing but rocks and snow, but I am certain neither K..... or her 6Th grade class never came close to summitting. From passing the tree-line to the summit is like another 7 miles of steep and rocky climbing, unlike the well groomed path up to the tree-line from the parking lot lower on the mountain. Unless you were well versed at judging distances where no trees exist to help scale a distance, what looks to be an out-crop of rock, or a ridge-line a couple hundreds off could easily be a mile off. The one thing I do clearly remember is how George and I thought we only had another couple dozen minutes of hiking to do to before we reached the last few hundred yards of ridge-line before the summit, only to find, like a mirage, that what was thought to be the one last ridge-line we had to climb, there was another ridge-line equally as big behind it and another one behind it and on and on it went. The summit looked closer each ridge-line we climbed and talus field we crossed , but the summit was much further off than we ever anticipated. We did finally come to see we were definitely on the last ridge-line leading to the summit. (less info)
