What is Vitiligo Vitiligo (vit-ill-EYE-go) is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin are destroyed. As a result, milky white patches (depigmentation) appear on the skin in different parts of the body.
How Is Vitiligo Diagnosed? The diagnosis of vitiligo is made based on a physical examination, medical history, biopsy of skin tissue and other laboratory tests.
During court depositions in 1994, Michael Jackson's dermatologist Dr. Arnold Klein presented lab tests, legal medical documents and testified that in 1984, Michael was diagnosed with both vitiligo and a form of lupus which also causes skin disoloration
Any part of your body may be affected by vitiligo, depigmentation usually develops first on sun-exposed areas of your skin, such as your hands, feet, arms, face and lips. Although it can start at any age, vitiligo often first appears between the ages of 20 and 30.
About 0.5 to 1 percent of the world's population, or as many as 65 million people, have vitiligo. In the United States, 1 to 2 million people have the disorder. Vitiligo may also be hereditary; that is, it CAN run in families but MOST people diagnosed with vitiligo do NOT have a family history of the disorder.
How does Vitiligo effect people? While vitiligo is usually not harmful medically, its emotional and psychological effects can be devastating. People with vitiligo can experience emotional stress, particularly if the condition develops on visible areas of the body . Some people who have vitiligo feel embarrassed, depressed, or worried about how others will react. .Since Vitiligo is so noticeable and embarrassing to some patients, special cosmetics are great to conceal the blotches and create evenness of skin tone.
Vitiligo generally appears in one of three (3) patterns:
1. Focal. Depigmentation is limited to one or a few areas of your body.
2. Segmental. Loss of skin color occurs on only one side of your body.
3. Universal wide-spread across many or parts of your body. where pigment loss can involve MOST of the surface of your skin.
For some people, vitiligo spreads slowly, over many years. For other people, spreading occurs rapidly. additional depigmentation can follow periods of physical or emotional stress.
Vitiligo Treatments There is no cure for vitiligo. The main goal of treating vitiligo is to restore the function of the skin and improve the patient's appearance.. The choice of therapy depends on the number of white patches; their location, sizes, and how widespread they are. Plus how the skin reacts as treatments to restore pigment do NOT work for everyone.
Treatment may include covering smaller patches with long-lasting dyes, light-sensitive drugs in addition to ultraviolet light therapy, or corticosteroid creams. For people who do not respond or have vitiligo on more than 50 percent of their body, depigmentation May be recommeded as the best treatment option.
Depigmentation does not actually bleach the skin. Instead it works by inhibiting the skins pigment-producing cells, or melanocytes, which lie deep in the skin.
The procedure does NOT change ones race or character it is mearly a way for those who suffer from this disorder to even out their skin tone and take back some control over an incurable skin disorder.
people who have vitiligo should minimize sun exposure and use a sunscreen that provides protection from both the UVA and UVB forms of ultraviolet light. This will also minimizes tanning, which makes the contrast between normal and depigmented skin less noticeable.

If you watch the pressconferance MJ had on March 5th, watch his hand, and you can CLEARLY see his vitiligo.
Check out the 2 videos of anchorman Lee thomas who also has vitiligo, he talks about Michael also. You can find them in my favourites!*
I just have to say one other thing other than the description. I do not cencoring the comments, but I'm getting sick of the "He has thons of surgery he must have bleached his skin". What, cause he has a thin nose he cant have vitiligo?! He hates his race cause he has a tiny nose?! Thats absurd. [Not to mention - his father did pick on him cause he had a big nose "You cant be my son, your nose is too big!" So if you wanna judge, go ahead but you probably would've done the same thing yourself.]
But if you do think you have a valid reason for him not having vitiligo, please post. But I can't imagine anyone having one, except "He's a freak, of course he cant have vitiligo".
And what about his dermatologist Dr. Arnold Klein who testified in court that Jackson indeed had vitiligo? Do you really think they would lie under oath[and jepoardise his carrier]for Michael just cause he's Michael Jackson?
[Description starts here btw] People are calling Michael Jackson white, and that's just wrong. Michael is a black man, and has allways been. His skin has just turned white, and that's not his fault.
Michael has a skin disease called vitiligo and here are a compilation of clips where he or others has talked about his vitiligo, and also when he talks about his race, since some ignorant people are claiming he dislikes his race.
Here you can see a montage of pictures of Mike where you can see the vitiligo. http://img118.ima... If you want some vitiligopictures in better quality, just message me.
And here you can see how well the makeup can cover up the blotches:
