This ancient tale of mistaken identity, endurance and the triumph of virtue through honorable means is translated to 17th-century America. While escorting a princess on horseback to her bridegroom, a jealous maid forces the princess to swap roles. When they arrive at the bridegroom's village, the princess (disguised as the maid) tends the geese and the maid (disguised as the princess) prepares to marry the prince. Eventually, Falada, the princess's talking horse - and the princess's own magical powers - reveal her true identity.

From the Brothers Grimm: Bristlelip FromtheBr... - 67 views - 3 weeks ago
A comic tale focusing on the importance of empathy and kindness, this adaptation of the Grimm's tale, "King Thrushbeard," is set in Federalist Virginia (about 1815). Similar to The Taming of the Shrew, the story concerns a haughty heroine, her exasperated father, and her new husband's elaborate plan to humble her spirit by sending her to work as a kitchen maid in the home of one of her rejected suitors.

From the Brothers Grimm: Jack and the Dentist's Daughter FromtheBr... - 69 views - 1 month ago
African American actors in period costumes and vintage cars re-enact a variant of the Grimms' comic story, "The Master Thief," in a small 1930s American town. Jack, a poor laborer's son, wants to marry the dentist's daughter, but the dentist insists that he earn money first. When clever jack steals the money from thugs Robin Hood-fashion, the dentist devises more premarital hurdles. Jack even kidnaps the preacher and steals the sheets off the dentist's bed — while he's sleeping in it. A fine example of an American Jack Tale, closely related to traditional trickster tales found worldwide.

I saw all of these From the Brother's Grimm movies on my local Public Broadcasting Station ( PBS ) in Dallas at one point. I loved the series because it felt closer to home with the way they were retold too happen in the US.

I tried to get the DVDs later on and found out they were $40-$60 for each episode, I wish I had recorded the series.
