Two Robot Test FlyByPC - 151 views - 5 months ago
Testing inter-robot communication; two robots "sharing" usage of a plastic cylinder. Since the robots are not secured in place, positional repeatability is not perfect; the learned positions drift with use. Sorry for the poor video quality.

RGB LED pin FlyByPC - 848 views - 8 months ago
A simple blinking-light gizmo, made with a four-wire RGB LED and a PIC microcontroller. Definitely "Geek Couture." Currently set for Red/White/Blue for Election Day 2008 (but easily modifiable for other occasions). Complete open-source plans to be made available shortly.

Z80 computer demo FlyByPC - 773 views - 9 months ago
A new peripheral for the Z80 computer: a RS232 interface to an Alpha 215R LED display. Sorry for the really horrible cell-phone-video; I'll see if I can get a video of this with my camcorder soon.

This computer was built for the EET325 Microprocessors course at Drexel University's Goodwin College of Professional Studies.

Z80 computer: LCD text display FlyByPC - 1,748 views - 10 months ago
** Add &fmt=18 to the end of the URL, for better quality; it will make the LCD display more readable. **

Here is the first peripheral for the DrACo/Z80 computer: a two-line LCD text display. The Z80 computer (and this text display) were created for an upcoming Microprocessors course for the AET program at Drexel University's Goodwin College of Professional Studies. The computer is still a work-in-progress, but the basic design is more or less finalized at this point. More information is available at www.paleotechnologist.net .

Robot Test FlyByPC - 133 views - 1 year ago
A simple pick-and-place routine to test out one of the lab robots at BCC. Sorry about the really poor quality (but hey -- my phone does a better job at video than my camcorder does at making phone calls!) This sequence was preprogrammed into the robot's control computer (the positions were manually taught using the pendant, first.)

Labyrinth game FlyByPC - 1,200 views - 1 year ago
A digital version of the classic "ball-in-a-maze" Labyrinth game. A 3-axis accelerometer provides tilt information, and a PIC16F877A microcontroller displays a block representing the ball on the screen. Various levels are implemented; on-screen icons include "holes" for the ball to fall into, ending the game; portals to other levels, and (currently non-functional) walls. To be added: a timer (for scoring), music etc. Contact me for project details (or a better-quality copy of the video) if you're interested.

(Very disorganized) code available at www.intellectualism.org/PIC

Buddy at Pup'n'Iron FlyByPC - 1,126 views - 1 year ago
One of my friends had a "dog party" at Pup'n'Iron. I brought Buddy along; he made a lot of new friends and learned about agility training. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Flight Simulator X approach and landing of the default Boeing 747-400 into Rand Airport, SA (FAGN). Somehow YouTube cut off the tail end of the video; sorry.

Dinosaur Plant time-lapse FlyByPC - 19,549 views - 2 years ago
A Dinosaur Plant (Anastatica hierochuntica, I think) "coming back to life" (rehydrating) after having been dormant. Time-lapse movie, speeded up 1000x.

"Hands-off" Cessna flight FlyByPC - 3,927 views - 2 years ago
Can a Cessna 172S be flown from one airport to another in Flight Simulator X -- with absolutely *no* actions by the pilot once the plane starts rolling (I.E. with no pilot on board)...?

About Me: I guess the best description is Paleotechnologist. I enjoy working with technology, and being a curmudgeon, particularly enjoy working with older relics from the dawn of the Computer Age to get them working again or to bring new life to old technology. One current project, for instance, is a Z80-based computer system.
Hometown:

Country:
United States
Schools:
ODU, GCC, RCC, NVCC
Hobbies:
Flight Sim, Raytracing and modeling, digital cinematography, math and science, Chess, etc.
Movies:
Documentaries; I especially like Connections and Learning To Fly. I also enjoy sci-fi, but wish they didn't always leave out the science.
Music:
Classical, New Age, Ambient, and some folk (e.g. Blackmore's Night)
Books:
Mostly nonfiction, though I do enjoy L.E. Modesitt, Terry Pratchett, Arthur C. Clarke, J.R.R. Tolkien, Terry Brooks, Robert L. Forward, and about half of Alan Dean Foster's books. As far as nonfiction, Dr. Penrose's The Road to Reality is very interesting; it's essentially an entire course in higher math and modern physics. (Just don't drop it on your foot; it's a BEAST.)
