PS The "he" Midge was referring to was of course Bob Geldof, although from what Midge said I got the impression thae Midge had a hand in writing the lyrics too, not just the music. Midge was also the producer and arranger as well. Midge told me some VERY interesting stories of the making of that record and if you want to hear them then send me a private message and i shall be happy to share those stories Midge told me! :)

I want to address your observation that the line "Well, tonight thank God it's THEM instead of you" from the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" is "harsh". Many years ago, I spoke with Midge Ure (the co-writer of that song) about that line. Midge told me that line was chosen because he wanted to address two things:
1.the unspoken & selfish feelings of many folks who see the suffering of others and quietly say to themselves "Thank God that's not ME!"
2.the sad fact that many (if not most) of those who do so make no subsequent efforts to relieve those very folks of at least a measure of their suffering.
EVERY line in that wonderful, moving song was carefully chosen to make people THINK and more important to MOTIVATE them to try to help others less fortunate than themselves.
