Laughton had collaborated with Bertolt Brecht, on Galileo, and later, at the advice of his manager,denouced Brecht to the press, Brecht having fled to
Germany following testimony before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. Brecht later wrote a poem about Laughton: "Speak not to me of that man who denounced me before he was asked." Laughton denounced Brecht midst an anti Communist witch hunt, in the hope that he might save his career. Theirs was one of the great collaborations of the 20th century. They had been close friends in Hollywood, and had collaborated closely on Galileo.
Brecht considered Laughton in a direct theatrical line which began with Shakespeare. Brecht had fled the US in 1948, the year the film was made.
