Founded on Labor Day 2000, the mission of the D.C. Employment Justice Center is to secure, protect, and promote workplace justice in the D.C. metropolitan area. Since its founding, the EJC has successfully used a combination of strategies, including legal services, policy advocacy, community organizing, and education, to protect the rights of low-wage workers, focusing on particularly vulnerable populations, such as minority workers, domestic violence victims, immigrant workers, and women workers. In just over eight years, the EJC has returned more than $4.5 million dollars back into the pockets of low-wage workers, achieved many legislative victories that have reformed the workers' compensation and unemployment compensation systems in the District, educated thousands of workers about their rights and responsibilities on the job, and built two vibrant community organizing programs.
