Virginia, a 13-year-old girl living in Maine with her older sister Caroline and her father Ford, is still grieving the death of her mother, who was killed three years prior in a riding accident. The horse she was riding, Twister, was sold to a neighbor, but Virginia still sneaks out to the property to visit her, and even helps her to give birth to Stormy. As Stormy grows up, Virginia continues to sneak out to care for him and to train him. The owner of both the horses attempts to train him for his son Darrow, Caroline's boyfriend, but sells him when the horse proves too much for the spoiled boy to handle. Meanwhile, Virginia begins working for one of Blake's trainers, Jessie. Eventually, Virginia's father purchases Stormy for Virginia and the two enter the endurance race that Darrow wins (albeit usually by cheating) every year. Can she and Stormy overcome the odds and win the race? Watch and see!
When fifteen-year-old Natalie's world is shattered by the death of her mother after a battle with cancer, her father sends her to Nevada for Christmas to visit her aunt's ranch. Natalie has kept a single white rose, which serves as the only remaining link to the mother she lost. The rose falls out of her pocket into the riding corral unnoticed, but the next day a snow-white mare, thought by all to be a stray, stands where the rose has fallen. Natalie thus names the horse Rose, which turns out to be the name of a horse her mother owned when she was a little girl. As Natalie rides and cares for Rose, she learns to accept the death of her mother and comes to realize that death is a season of life. Natalie's Rose is the story of comfort and assurance for everyone confronted with the death of a loved one; the ones we love never truly leave us as long as we care about them, as love never dies.
Moondance Alexander is a free-spirited girl with some interesting fashion sense (!) who stumbles across an escape-artist pinto who looks as unique as she does! Inspired by a true story, the movie follows the adventures of 9th-grader Moondance who recently lost her father and lives with her eccentric artist mother. She discovers lost pinto pony "Tinkerbelle" and returns him to his rightful owner, the no-nonsense horse trainer Dante Longpre. Moondance learns that Tinkerbelle, who she re-names Checkers, is quite an accomplished jumper, and is determined to help him realize his true potential. She convinces Dante to let her work at his stable in exchange for riding lessons, and in time decides to train Checkers for a prestigious jumping competition. Despite criticism from other riders (and judges) for riding a pinto rather than a less-flamboyant Thoroughbred, Moondance learns that hard work and loyalty can be a winning combination. Cajun quarter-horse trainer Lloyd Bourdelle (Walter Matthau) struggles to eke out a living for himself and his three sons Buddy, Randy and Casey (Andrew A. Rubin, Stephen Burns and Michael Hershewe). Their prize horse is an orphaned foal named Casey's Shadow, named after Lloyd's youngest son. The question is whether or not Lloyd, a life-long loser, can take advantage of the opportunity for bettering his lot afforded by a once-in-a-lifetime longshot.
