well, u can analyze and hypothesize using sociocultural phenomena, and you can usually come up with an acurate estimate. when mind altering drugs enter a cultural mainstream, and the cultural music then makes rapid changes and advancements in style that fit mood and setting for said 'mind-altering-substances', there is often a link between the two. pink floyd was writing trip-music when elvis still led the charts and the beatles we just sarting to smoke weed.
