Cinema of Kerala or Malayalam cinema refers to films made in the Indian state of Kerala in the Malayalam language. Malayalam movies typically portray social or familial issues and as a result are considered more realistic and highbrow than Bollywood movies. Despite budget contrains due to limited market, Malayalam cinema could pioneer various technical, thematic and production aspects of films in India or South India. The first 3D film produced in India, My Dear Kuttichathan (1984), was made in Malayalam. The first Cinemascope film produced in South India was Thacholi Ambu (1978). Many Malayalam films were remade to other languages, especially Hindi. Garam masala, Kyon Ki, Billu, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke in Hindi, Dindigul Sarathy, Sundara Travels, Friends, Ninaithale Inikkum, Perazhagan, Kuselan, Chandramukhi in Tamil, Classmates, Chandralekha in Telugu, Aaptamitra, Bellary Naga in Kannada are some of the examples.
