Sometimes the press covers remarkable stories about abusive incidents in the workplace. Mostly they involve illegal harassment. Sometimes they are incidents of bullying. Most bullying stories also appear in our In the News Playlist.
The Healthy Workplace Campaign is a national grassroots network of volunteer State Coordinators across the U.S. The group has a single focus -- to enact the anti-bullying Healthy Workplace Bill based on the work of the Workplace Bullying Institute and authored by Suffolk Law Professor David Yamada. The Campaign began in 2002. First bill introduced in CA in 2003. To date 21 states have introduced at least one version of the HWB. The HWB website is healthyworkplacebill.org.
Since 1998, WBI founders have been interviewed over 1,100 times for media stories -- print, radio, online and TV. Here are some clips. Most clips also contain a story told by a bullied target.
Unions, as the only advocates for employees, have a natural role in the fight against workplace bullying. Bullying is an employee health and safety issue. It is primarily about the abuse of power by management. It is a human right to enjoy a sense of personal dignity at work. Unions should confront the assault of its members. Unions can strive to include anti-bullying bargaining language and can support our campaign to enact the anti-bullying Healthy Workplace Bill in every state in which the union exists. Unions owe it to their members!
