Twang Darkly Comes to Town -- oil can guitar and harmonica BuckoFutreal - 40 views - 21 hours ago
A post-blues western atmospheric using my modded Afri-can oil can guitar in a Gm open tuning (DGDGBbD), run through a blues vibe model on my Line 6. The harmonica is a Lee Oscar in a harmonic minor tuning. Later on, my yardsale banjo (tuned DGBbD) and cajon see some action. The bass, as usual, comes from my Danelectro guitar chugging through an EHX HOG.

If you're interested in the oil can guitar, you can find 'em at http://www.townshipguitars.com / (no association of mine, so I can't help you). My particular oil can was a gift from my brother Andy. I've replaced its pickup with a model meant for dobro, so mine sounds a bit different than the original, unmodified South African models.

Late Night Electric Dulcimer Edition of 'Elisha Expedition' BuckoFutreal - 148 views - 1 month ago
So, at 1am, it seemed like a pretty good idea to crank UP the electric dulcimer -- way up -- and have a go. For better or worse, here's what happened. Ah, the joy of multitrack recording: you end up with a lot of potential mixes.

The electric dulcimer, my dulcicaster, is tuned DAD. There's another dulcimer (also the dulcicaster, but sounding like a banjo) that comes in about half way through. The guitars (including the bass) are all standard tuned.

For a less crazy version of the song, follow the link back to the "normal" edition.

Expedition Elisha -- guitar and dulcimer original BuckoFutreal - 146 views - 1 month ago
Original piece featuring acoustic guitar, mountain dulcimer (my dulcicaster, sounding like a banjo), and electric guitar towards the end. The percussion is played a new instrument I obtained recently, the "multi-cajon." As usual of late, the bass sound is my electric run through the Electro-Harmonix HOG.

A bit on the longish side, maybe, betraying its its origin as an improvisational arrangement of the acoustic guitar part.

The title refers to Elisha Mitchell, a 19th century explorer and scientist from North Carolina. He established Mt. Mitchell as the tallest point east of the Mississippi, but met an ill-end for his trouble.

Appalachian dulcimer original: Devil's Stompin' Ground BuckoFutreal - 455 views - 3 months ago
An original piece for Appalachian mountain dulcimer. The dulcimer is tuned EBB with a capo at fret 1.

If you like check out my dulcimer CD at http://dulcimersarego.com

Interestingly, the bass part on this song is played on my electric guitar -- run through an Electro-Harmonix HOG, run through a bass amp model on my POD X3. Mmmmm... sweet technology.

Escape from Wire Mountain -- Appalachian Dulcimer and Electric Guitar BuckoFutreal - 316 views - 3 months ago
If you like, see http://dulcimersarego.com for my cd of original dulcimer music.

This is an original piece for GCC tuned mountain dulcimer. The guitar tracks are played on my Danelectro Pro -- what a great guitar; it's the first time I've really used it on one of these videos.

The "organ" part that comes in halfway through is the guitar routed through an Electro-Harmonix HOG, played through a rotary speaker simulation on the POD X3.

Perry's Theme -- Appalachian dulcimer, electric dulcimer, & bamboo flute BuckoFutreal - 888 views - 6 months ago
The dulcimers are tuned EBB (e.g., a step up from a DAA tuning) for this one in order to accommodate the E-tuned Renaissance flute.

The piece is a new arrangement of one I've been playing for a long time. It's simple but pretty; I'll probably do another arrangement of it here later for variation.

Arroyo -- acoustic guitar and gourdtar BuckoFutreal - 158 views - 1 year ago
Andy played the acoustic guitar on this one and I overdubbed some electric gourdtar (e.g., my homemade lapsteel -- see http://michael.futreal.com/gou rdtar ). We didn't happen to video tape the proceedings, so I've set it to some thematically appropriate photographs that our father, Kenneth Futreal, took on a recent trip to Arizona and the Grand Canyon.

This one is available on on our 2007 CDr release Bukka's Bad Trip http://michael.futreal.com/am/ bukka

Pigeon River Blues -- guitar, harmonica, mountain dulcimer BuckoFutreal - 945 views - 1 year ago
This is a blues track from the 2007 Andy and Michael Futreal cd, Bukka's Bad Trip ( see http://cdbaby.com/cd/amfutreal ).

Andy plays acoustic guitar; I play dulcimer and harmonica. Andy also took most of the photographs used in this video, the majority of which were taken in western NC in the vicinity of the Pigeon River.
