You'll need vegetable tanned leather with enough thickness. Anything else would just get ruined. An alternative is to carve on a small piece of veg tanned leather and then stitch the whole thing onto another leather you like.

You're right about that. Both beer and coffee have plenty of magnesium. Problem with beer is that the alcohol in it depletes magnesium. Still, if you're going to have a drink, beer is a good choice.
