Halid Bešlić, a Bosnian legend and one of the most popular singers across the Balkans. He has been performing since 1979.

In March 2009 Halid suffered serious injuries when his car skidded off an icy road just outside Sarajevo. Despite surgeries in hospitals in Bosnia and abroad, he lost his right eye. Halid has now recovered and is singing again.

After the car accident in the spring, touched by the messages of support from all over the former Yugoslavia, Halid Bešlić said: "What's happening to me now, in these critical moments, gives me hope that our part of the world can be dominated not only by hatred, but also by love..."

U emisiji "Nedjeljom u dva", 14.06.2009, on je govorio o u svom lečenju, o ratu i o posleratnoj Bosni i Herzegovini:
Svi šute, svi dalje to nose u sebi..."

Ratko Mladic, a "general"? Balkani1 - 1,584 views - 3 months ago
Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic on the hills above Sarajevo. And some of their victims in town, 1992.

A recorded radio conversation, demonstrating that the purpose of Mladić's Serb forces' bombardments was clearly psychological and political. Ratko Mladić sounds more concerned with destroying historic, cultural, and political targets than he was with striking at enemy's military forces:

Mladić [to Colonel Vukasinovic, artillery chief]: Are you up there?

Vukasinovic: Yes, everything is ready.

Mladić: Which weapons have you got ready?

Vukasinovic: I have those up there, in Kresa.

Mladić: What can you hit?

Vukasinovic: I can fire all the way to the garrison.

Mladić: Do not fire at the garrison. Can you pound Velesici?

Vukasinovic: I can.

Mladić: Are your guns pointed toward the target?

Vukasinovic: They are.

Mladić: And tell me, can you pound Baščaršija [the old Muslim, historic area]

Vukasinovic: I can.

Mladić: What?

Vukasinovic: Yes, no problem.

Mladić: Keep the Presidency and the Assembly building under steady, direct fire and pound slowly in intervals until I give the order to stop...Make sure they don't get any sleep down there.. Shell them till they are on the edge of madness...

Dr Franjo Topic, "Before and Now" Balkani1 - 1,411 views - 8 months ago
Prof Dr Franjo Topic is the Head of Sarajevo's (Catholic) Croatian Culltural Association "Napredak". His name has been mentioned recently as the potential mayor of the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo.

Dr Topic is reluctant to speak about his candidacy, but admits that he knows what he would do, if the ruling SDA (the Muslim "Party of Democratic Action") invites him for talks regarding the mayor's job.

The association Dr Topic leads has a hundred years history. He revived it after the end of Communism and kept it going during the war.

The biggest struggle recently was the exodus of Croatian Catholics from the region during 1992-1995, and it's still a big problem today. At present, the Catholic population in the diocese Vrhbosna is less than half of what it was before the conflict. Dr Topic advocates the return of Croats who left the city and insists that local Croat politicians should accept Bosnia as their country.

Arkan, "A Surreal Experience", 1996 Balkani1 - 30,674 views - 8 months ago
In a very rare interview in English, Serbian warlord Željko Ražnatović, known as "Arkan", is talking to BBC reporter Jim Fish.

Broadcast on World Service Radio, 10 September 1996. In the same week Arkan also wrote an extensive letter to the Editor of London's "Guardian" (14 September 1996), titled "Arkan: I am no war criminal."

This video includes footage previously used by the film "The Death of Yugoslavia" ("Brian Lapping" for the BBC, 1995) and photos by various photographers, including by Ron Haviv /Saba.

After a robbery and killing spree across Western Europe in the 1970s and jailbreaks in Belgium, Holland, Sweden... Arkan became untouchable across Yugoslavia. His bravado and good fortune led to the speculation that Arkan was already working for the Yugoslav State Security, the UDBA and was used in the assassination of several of Tito's Yugoslav opponents abroad. In the 1980s Arkan was back in Belgrade with high-level connections in the state apparatus, particularly close to the Slovenian Stane Dolanc, a hard-liner and Tito's federal interior minister.

During the wars in Croatia and Bosnia, Arkan's "Tigers" answered directly to Serbia's Ministry of Interior. In April 1992, they stormed the Bosnian towns of Bijeljina and Zvornik, securing strategic links between later Serb-held territories in Bosnia with Serbia.

According to the Hague War Crimes Tribunal an indictment against Arkan was issued in 1997. The warrant was kept sealed and was made public in March 1999, a week after NATO bombing in Yugoslavia started.

On 15 January 2000, Arkan was shot dead, while lounging in a leather chair in the lobby of Belgrade's Inter Continental Hotel, together with 2 of his companions. Nearly 7 years later, a court in Serbia convicted 8 men of the murders, one of them an off-duty policeman.

Ron Haviv's photograph of a Serb gunman about to kick a bleeding woman in the head is one of the most striking images to come out of the Balkans in the 1990s.

It was spring 1992 in Bijeljina and Arkan's "Tigers" had just entered the town. Gunmen had just shot two Muslim women and a man. As they lay there dying, taunted by their killers, Ron Haviv was able to take the photo. That he was able to get close enough to take the photo was because of an invitation by Arkan himself.

Arkan was furious when that picture was published and put out a death warrant on Haviv, stating publicly that he looked forward to drinking his blood. But Arkan had personally invited Haviv to photograph what he called the "liberation" of Bijeljina from Muslims.

Haviv remembers: "It was a combination of luck and playing to Arkan's ego. He was a very smart man, fluent in several languages and he thought he had the ability to control his own image.
Haviv, a US photo-journalist who chronicled the break-up of Yugoslavia has won several "World Press" and "Picture of the Year" awards.

A Legend Balkani1 - 1,112 views - 8 months ago
In memoriam: Toše Proeski
(25 January 1981 - 16 October 2007)

A rare talent, Toše Proeski was the first popular legend to emerge after the collapse of Yugoslavia. There was no sign of nationalism in his songs. A classically-trained musician, always smiling, Proevski sang mostly about love.

This boosted his popularity across the new states of the old country. Toše sang in Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, in Romani, English, Italian... He had several Number One hits, not only in Macedonia, but also in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia. And beyond - Proeski had his fans in Greece and Bulgaria, no small achievement for a Macedonian performer.

Toše Proeski was a Regional UNICEF Ambassador and a role model for many. He was a star without a parallel for the Balkans.

He died in a car crash on the motorway near the Croatian town of Nova Gradiška. Toše Proeski was buried with full state honours in his home town of Kruševo in Macedonia.

They are not "primitive" for not being affraid to sing their traditional, cultural songs, together, in front of a camera ("Russian Writer Shooting at Sarajevo"). It only shows how strong Serb culture from the Romanija region is. One gets so much energy being in such a circle, singing on top of your lungs, together!
