Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA) is a nonprofit organization working in the US and South Africa to combat HIV/AIDS, assist children orphaned by AIDS, advance human rights and equality, safeguard voting rights, and educate and empower at-risk youth.
Name: Artists for a New South Africa
ANSA makes a substantial difference by: developing innovative, collaborative programs; providing grants and resources to effective community organizations: and raising public awareness and mobilizing action through media campaigns, advocacy, and the arts. ANSA works in collaboration with experts, activists, and grassroots leaders, harnessing the talents, resources, and influence of all its diverse members to have strategic impact.

Founded in 1989 by noted members of the entertainment community to support the struggle against apartheid, ANSA has since raised over $9 million for African nonprofits, shipped 70 tons of medical supplies and books to poor communities, and educated millions of people in the US and Africa about HIV/AIDS and voting rights.

ANSA's founders, board members, advisors, and core supporters include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Alfre Woodard, Carlos Santana & Deborah Santana, Samuel L. Jackson & LaTanya Richardson, Gillian Anderson, Danny Glover, Jackson Browne, Blair Underwood, George Lopez, CCH Pounder, Alexandra Paul, Morgan Freeman, Jurnee Smollett, Mary Steenburgen, Cicely Tyson, Jonathan Butler, Johnny Clegg, Roma Mafia, Gloria Reuben, Jasmine Guy, Noah Gray-Cabey, Angela Bassett, Robert Guillaume, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, Anthony Anderson, Dave Winfield, and many more.

We are deeply dismayed that last Wednesday, August 8, South African President Thabo Mbeki dismissed Deputy Health Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge. The former Deputy Health Minister has been a champion in the fight against HIV/AIDS. She led the development of the HIV/AIDS National Strategic Plan, called for South Africans to get tested and treated with ARVs when necessary.
In response to President Mbeki's decision, ANSA is urging our constituency to take a moment to sign a petition created by Friends of Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge in support of the former Deputy Health Minister.
Please go to www.thepetitionsite.com/3/support-for-nozizwe-madlala- routledge to sign the petition.

Wed., July 25 is National Call-In Day for the PATHWAY Act, a Congressional bill that would increase the effectiveness of U.S. funding on HIV/AIDS prevention. Please call your Representative and urge him/her to co-sponsor the PATHWAY Act...or thank him or her for being a co-sponsor. This is an important bipartisan effort to eliminate President Bush's requirement that 1/3 of all US funding for global HIV prevention goes to abstinence-until-marriage programs. Studies prove that this appraoch is ineffective in preventing the spread of HIV. US tax dollars should be spent on science, not ideology.

If you know who your Rep is, call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 225-3121. If you don't, go to congressDOTorg Type in your zip code and click on your Rep's name to get their DC office number. Before you call, check pepfarwatchDOTorg to see if your Rep. is already a co-sponsor. (If s/he is, please call to say thank you!) ANSA is proud to be a co-sponsor of this advocacy day.

ANSA and Deborah & Carlos Santana's Milagro Foundation have launched a new campaign to meet additional needs of the orphans and vulnerable children served by ANSA's It Takes a Village (ITV) program. In addition to the many services provided by ITV, we're working together to raise money to provide: home and roof repairs; mattresses and blankets; and school uniforms and other clothes and shoes, as their young bodies continue to grow. For the next year, ANSA's goal is to provide 100 orphan families in Ingwavuma with additional help to meet these pressing needs, and we hope to expand to other communities. Every dollar donated to this effort will be matched by Deborah and Carlos Santana's Milagro Foundation—dollar for dollar—up to the first $12,500. With the help of our supporters, this means that at least $25,000 will be raised.

Also on Wednesday we are co-sponosring a national call in day to Congress n support of the PATHWAT Act - stay tuned for more information.

With your help, ANSA came in at #11 out of more than 7000 projects.
Although we did not get enough votes to move to the Top 5 round, we are very grateful for all the support from so many people.

A great deal of good came out of this effort, including big spikes in website traffic, sign-ups, online donations, and google hits. Many, many thanks to all of you who voted and spread the word.
