Tony Blair, Britains former Prime Minister and current Special Envoy to the Middle East, was at 92Y on Mon, Jun 22 for The Business of Giving with Matthew Bishop, New York bureau chief for The Economist.

The two spoke about Iran, Iraq, global warming, the Middle East, Africa, and much more. Charming to a tee, said blogger The Brooklyn Socialite.

The Jewish Week covered Blairs frank comments on Israel and Palestine. The Arab world today actually wants the issue [the Israeli-Palestinian conflict] resolved, he said. That gives us an opportunity.

According to the Times of London, Blair thought that it was impossible to predict the outcome of protests in Iran over the landslide presidential election victory claimed by the incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Since then, the government of Iran has made their intentions more clear, with the LA Times reporting that that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be sworn in for a second term by mid-August.

Blairs most interesting remarks might have been on Globalization and Americas place in it. Vikie Karp at True/Slant wrote:

In his introductory remarks about the future of globalization and achieving justice and equality for all on an international scale, Blair said We are a global community. And its chief attribute is that no one nation, not even this great nation of America, can do it on its own. In any case, power is shifting East and it is shifting quickly. Countries like India and China will take their rightful place. And its galvanizing people, too. Look at Iran today. So thats my theory, and if Im right, the countries of the global community must work in alliance with each other, and with equality, and it will work only if there is a feeling of obligation beyond their borders and a real belief that they can share values. If its simply a battle of interests, we will fail and the failure will be ugly.

The following are program notes for Masters of the Keyboard: Shai Wosner, piano at the 92nd Street Y from April 25, 2009.

SCHUMANN: Nachtstücke, Op. 23
DEBUSSY: Préludes, Book 1
SCHUMANN: Carnaval, Op. 9

In Carnaval, Op. 9 (composed 1834-35; 27 minutes), that genre is transformed into a monumental statement. Written in the winter of 1834-5 (and finished during carnival season), its short pieces are framed between the opening Préambule (or Introduction) and the closing finale and construct a dense web of moods, cross relations, riddles and allusions. Originally, the set was subtitled Faschingschwänke auf vier Noten (Carnival pranks based on four notes), since it uses the four pitches that musically stand for the letters Asch (the native bohemian village of Ernestine von Fricken, Schumanns fiancée at the time) but also Sch. A. (Schumanns last and middle initials). Many titles refer to specific characters, some fictional (from the commedia dellarte), others semi-fictional (such as Chiarina—reference to Clara Wieck, or Estrella—most likely Ernestine), and others real (Chopin and Paganini, whose movements are the only ones not based on the four pitches). Two very important characters that are both real and fictional, depending on the point of view, are Eusebius and Florestan, Schumanns frequent noms de plume and representations of aspects of the personality he created for himself. The rich, colorful array of characters is constructed with incredible economy and precision: Chopin is captured in no more than thirteen bars; Florestans erratic disposition comes to life and self-destructs in just over a single page.

Francine Segans World of Tasting Honey: History and Gourmet Tasting http://www.92y.org/shop/event_ detail.asp?productid=T-LP5FW05

In 2008, an Italian study found that it was possible to distinguish between different honey types, as well as pinpointing where exactly it was produced: "The floral origin of honeys is usually determined using melisso-palynological analysis and organoleptic characteristics, but the application of these techniques requires some expertise...In this study high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (HR-NMR) and multivariate statistical analysis methods were used to identify and classify honeys of five different floral sources. The 71 honey samples (robinia, chestnut, citrus, eucalyptus, polyfloral) were analyzed by HR-NMR using both 1H NMR and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation spectroscopy (HMBC)."

Those Italians it seems, take their honey as serious as they do their wine and cheese. Maybe as serious as noted food historian and expert Francine Segan does. On Jun 17, 2009 you can join Francine Segans latest talk in her World of Tasting series, Honey: History and Gourmet Tasting. Learn to differentiate the sublime flavors of a dozen types of honey, including French lavender, blueberry blossom, Hawaiian honey with tones of butterscotch and vanilla, and the famed tupelo honey, which comes from a flower of southern Georgia.

If you take good food as serious as we and Francine do, our CSA is something you might want to consider as well.

Bill Scheft in Conversation with Susie Essman at the 92nd Street Y 92ndStreetY - 觀看次數:179 - 1 月 以前
http://www.92y.org/shop/catego ry.asp?category=Lectures+and+C onversations888All+Lectures888

On May 20, Bill Scheft was here with Susie Essman as part of our Funny People series to talk about his past career as the head monologue writer for The Late Show with David Letterman, his new book Everything Hurts, Richard Simmons, the difference between his mother and father, and more. Bill took to his blog to write about the appearance: (http://billscheft.tumblr.com/ post/111115049/the-92nd-street -y-post-game-show)

"You know, when everyone tells you it couldnt have gone any better, when your agent (who reps among others, the great Michael Chabon) tells you she doesnt remember a better book event, when someone leaves a message and says she wishes the interview had been three hours rather than an hour and a half, even the self-loathingest alternator in your hard-wiring has to admit that things went okay. And by you, I mean Jay McInerney"

It was indeed a great event, and the video highlight here features a few stories that Bill did not include in his recap. One was about Richard Simmons on The Late Show with David Letterman, coming out on stage all oiled up, back when Dave still smoked cigars. Simmons asked in his flirtatious ways, David, will you teach me how to smoke a cigar? Skip to 3:50 in the video to hear the punchline that had everybody in stitches.

Next up in our Funny People series is Kate Clinton on Jun 11, (http://blog.92y.org/index.php ?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.92y.org% 2Fshop%2Fevent_detail.asp%3Fca tegory%3DFunny%2BPeople888%26p roductid%3DT-LC5FP14) when she will be here with Randy Cohen, better known as the writer of The Ethicist column at the New York Times.

Is there anyway you could upload the full Mos Def interview. His thoughts are the most accurate and interesting analysis' of our time in my opinion and it would be very rewarding to see him speak for a long time.

Thank you.
