Why birds?
The 9/11 masterminds needed air support-- eyes in the sky with more mobility and more ability than the satellites or conventional UAVs and helicopters could provide. These UAVs had to be designed such that they could be captured on video, because they would appear frequently.

First, there's the obvious purpose of reconnaissance and real-time mission status awareness. The area of Manhattan had to be under tight surveillance, if only to ensure the stage was properly set for the main events. Second, the videos and photos of the days major events had to be collected (or at least managed) at all costs. In addition to cops and FBI patrolling for photos and video - as "evidence for the investigation" - the well disguised UAVs would be intently searching for photographers during the crucial three minutes of the 2nd plane hit: 9:00 to 9:03 am. ...as well as the times 9:59 (scheduled South Tower "collapse" initiation) and 10:28 (N. Tower demolition). Also, WTC Building 7 would have to be under surveillance during the delayed "collapse" initiation at 5:20. Once again Hanjour attempted to rent a plane, and again he was asked to go up with an instructor for a flight evaluation to confirm his flight skills. The plane was the same: a Cessna 172. Yet, on this occasion Hanjour passed with flying colors and, later, this other instructor gave testimony to the commission that turned out to be crucial. The final report mentions the instructors name only once in a brief endnote buried at the back of the report. The note states:

"Hanjour successfully conducted a challenging certification flight supervised by an instructor at Congressional Air Charter of Gaithersburg, Maryland, landing at a small airport with a difficult approach. The instructor thought Hanjour may have had training from a military pilot because he used a terrain recognition system for navigation. Eddie Shalev interview." The failure at Freeway airport:

"During three such flights over two days in a single-engine Cessna 172, instructors Sheri Baxter and Ben Conner observed what others had before them. Hanjour had trouble controlling and landing the aircraft. Afterward, Baxter interviewed Hanjour extensively about his flight training and experience, and also reviewed his flight log, which documented 600 hours of flight time. On this basis she and Conner declined to approve a current license rating until Hanjour returned for more training. Moore's Law of exponential growth uses for its model the number of transistors fitted on an integrated circuit doubling nearly every two years. Here, World Trade Center controlled demolition theory is upheld by numerous audible explosions, not just reports of them (which fill many other worthwhile videos like 9/11 The Explosive Reality).

The "birds" kept an eye on the streets for cameras, which the police and FBI collected (as witnesses report here). Censoring 9/11 video began early. With hundreds of cameras trained on the buildings, videocameras with sound were most important. The explosions heard here tell the story of the demise of the Twin Towers, as well as WTC Building 7.
