The sound from the built in speakers on this laptop is nothing special. It gets pretty loud but there is no bass to speak of.... it's a laptop. =)
I've never had 5.1 computer speakers so I can't tell you if they will work or not. I send the audio out via HDMI to my 5.1 receiver and get 5.1 ...
