It's a generalization of a vector. A vector is a rank 1 tensor because it has one basis vector for each component. Higher rank tensors have more than one basis vector for each component. Also a scalar is a rank 0 tensor because it has NO basis vector(i.e. direction) for it's component.

It is taught by a former Christian Fundamentalist who also spent many years studying the Bible, but it has added historical context...
